Although we all love to keep up with Reese Witherspoon‘s book club recommendations when they come out every month, including her most recent pick of Starling House by Alix E. Harrow, her full list of book club picks is the ultimate place to get some book inspo.
And, with the spooky season officially upon us this October, Witherspoon hand-selected six books from her previous picks that she thinks would make for a perfect Halloween-inspired read. “Cozy up, get comfy, grab some popcorn, and dive in to some of our favorite thrilling reads that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat,” Witherspoon wrote in her most recent newsletter.
In her list, she looks back at some of the most mysterious and nail-biting novels she’s suggested in the past, from August 2017’s pick The Lying Game by Ruth Ware to her February 2021 pick of The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse.

‘The Lying Game: A Novel’ by Ruth Ware
The Lying Game: A Novel, written by Ruth Ware, is sure to be a real page-turner. The novel follows four infamous high school best friends, Fatima, Thea, Kate and Isabel, as they reunite when a mysterious object uncovers their long-lost secrets.
‘The Night Tiger: A Novel’ by Yangsze Choo
The Night Tiger: A Novel, by Yangsze Choo, follows two ambitious characters: Ji Lin and Ren. While Ji Lin embarks on a quest to find the story behind a gruesome souvenir, Ren is on a mission to fulfill his former master’s dying wish. “Ji Lin and Ren’s increasingly dangerous paths crisscross through lush plantations, hospital storage rooms, and ghostly dreamscapes,” the description reads.
‘Within These Wicked Walls: A Novel’ by Lauren Blackwood
Within These Wicked Walls: A Novel, written by Lauren Blackwood, perfectly blends mystery and romance. The novel follows Andromeda, an exorcist apprentice who is struggling to get a job to make ends meet. That is, however, until she’s hired by the mysterious Magnus Rochester in a job that becomes much more dangerous and complicated than she was ever trained for.
‘Anatomy: A Love Story’ by Dana Schwartz
Set in Scotland in the 1800s, Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz tells the story of Hazel Sinnett, a woman who’s adamant about becoming a surgeon despite society’s expectations. To train her craft, however, she forms an unlikely connection with Jack Currer, who’s a so-called “resurrection man.”
“I think you’ll really enjoy the secrets that begin to unravel, and ghostly adventures riddled throughout this historical fiction,” Witherspoon said in her recommendation.
‘Still Lives: A Novel’ by Maria Hummel
“I’ve got a page-turner for y’all!” Witherspoon said when she first announced Still Lives: A Novel by Maria Hummel. The book follows Kim Lord, an avant-garde artist who goes missing on the day of her big exhibition. As the time passes since her disappearance, her secrets and of those around her, finally come to light.
‘The Sanatorium: A Novel’ by Sarah Pearse
“The Sanatorium is an eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat,” Witherspoon said of Sarah Pearse’s bestselling novel.
The book follows detective Elin Warner as she prepares to go on vacation with her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, in a remote and mysterious luxury hotel in the Swiss Alps called Le Sommet. Things start to go south, however, when Laurie goes missing on the first day of their stay.
