Caroline Kennedy‘s 1986 wedding to Edwin Schlossberg might be the closest America has ever gotten to a royal wedding.
When it comes to American dynasty families, there is no one quite like the Kennedys so the world couldn’t look away when it came time for Jackie Kennedy and John F. Kennedy’s eldest daughter to tie the knot.
Having watched Caroline grow up from the moment she entered the White House after her father became president when she was just three years old, the American people had become invested in her life.
A 28-year-old Caroline, who now serves as the United States Ambassador to Australia, married Schlossberg on July 19 — her new husband’s 41st birthday — in a small Catholic ceremony in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, the Cape Cod community where the Kennedys own a multi-home compound to this day.
She and Schlossberg, an exhibit designer, met while working at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Caroline worked after graduating from Harvard.
The couple, who celebrated 37 years of marriage this past summer, share three children — Rose Kennedy Schlossberg (born 1988), Tatiana Celia Kennedy Schlossberg (born 1990), and John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg, known as Jack (born 1993).
Much to the surprise of the public, Caroline’s wedding was kept under wraps until the big day — though some photographers were still able to snap some photos outside the church.
Without the presence of her father, who was assassinated when Caroline was just 5 years old, the day was no doubt bittersweet. But with a stand-in to walk her down the aisle and the support of her mother and younger brother, John F. Kennedy Jr, Caroline’s wedding appeared joyous and celebratory.

The newlyweds waved to crowds that formed outside their wedding ceremony after word got out about the Kennedy wedding.
The big day was one of few public moments for the pair who have kept their long-lasting relationship and their family out of the public eye.
However, in recent years, their youngest son has become more outspoken about politics and his mom’s cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Ted Kennedy Walked Caroline Down the Aisle
Standing in for Caroline’s father who died in 1963, Senator Ted Kennedy walked his niece down the aisle and gave her away.
Caroline and Ted had a close relationship with her uncle. After his 2009 death, Caroline spoke about Ted during a memorial service. “In our family we were lucky to see his passion, his self-discipline and his genorosity of heart every single day,” she said.

Bridesmaids on Duty
As Caroline prepared to walk down the aisle, her bridesmaids were on hand to make sure her Caroline Herrara dress looked picture perfect.
Caroline’s cousin Maria Shriver, the daughter of Eunice Kennedy, served as maid of honor. Shriver had just married Arnold Schwarzenegger 3 months earlier.
Caroline Kennedy Shushes Journalists
After the cat was let out of the bag and some journalists caught wind of Caroline’s wedding, she made sure that the crowd wasn’t going to ruin the intimacy of her ceremony by playfully shushing bystanders moments before she entered the church.
Jackie’s Emotional Reaction
After the ceremony, Jackie appeared to be overcome with emotion and she cried on Ted’s shoulder.
