Although Kevin Costner‘s recent divorce from Christine Baumgartner took over the sound waves for the past few months, it turns out it wasn’t the first time the Yellowstone star has been through a messy split. In fact, Costner’s divorce from his first wife, Cindy Silva, cost the actor even more.
Back in 1994, Costner and Silva, who had been married for 16 years and together since college, announced their split through a seemingly amicable statement. “After 16 years together, we are ending our marriage,” the joint statement said, per People. “We have amicably resolved all issues regarding our children and financial affairs and a full marital settlement has been reached.”
Speaking of finances, the couple’s lack of a prenuptial agreement resulted in Costner having to pay Silva a total of $80 million in settlements fees. Talk about a massive payout!

A Star in the Making
As one can expect, dating a celebrity is no easy feat. For Silva, Costner’s rise to stardom was quite intimidating, especially when it came to his steamier roles. “Cindy doesn’t like these sexy roles, and she’s given me an ultimatum,” Costner reportedly told his architect friend John McInnes, per People. “I’ve either got to quit doing them or quit the movie business.”
When watching a steamy scene of Costner and actress Sean Young in No Way Out, for example, Silva reportedly let out some frustrations. “As one of those scenes came up [the Costners] were holding hands,” McInnes told the magazine. “[Cindy] sat quietly. But afterward, Kevin showed me his hand and said she squeezed it so hard all the blood ran out of it.” Ouch!
The Infidelity Rumors
Years after No Way Out, rumors that Costner cheated on Silva with a woman named Michelle Amaral on the Hawaiian set of his movie Waterworld became the relationship’s turning point.
At the time, People reported that a then-35-year-old Amaral was a hulu dancer at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, where the movie was shot. However, the outlet reported that Amaral’s husband and father of her three children previously denied the affair rumors.
A Long Time Coming
Despite their denial, the cheating rumors were enough for Silva to call it quits. According to a People source, however, things between Silva and Costner had been especially difficult during that time.
“You could see their relationship wasn’t working out,” a Waterworld production member told the outlet at the time. “They didn’t act like a family: she was doing her thing, he was doing his. They didn’t act close to one another, but they still talked. There wasn’t any mudslinging.”
Keeping the Kids as Priority
During their marriage, Costner and Silva welcomed three kids together; Annie, 39, Lily, 36, and Joe, 35. In addition to agreeing to share custody between them in the divorce settlement, the former couple also made being co-parents their top priority.
“They have a common love, their kids, who are the most important thing to both of them,” McInnes told People. “I don’t think they’ll have one of those cutthroat relationships. It’s just sad, because they were the perfect couple.”
