With how quick and passionate most Hollywood romances are, it’s no wonder so many people say to get a prenuptial agreement. Not even celebrities, too; since the divorce rate is so high, prenuptial agreements have become a rarity to almost a basic procedure when getting married. So many have done this to protect their assets, but some marriages, including some Hollywood marriages, said “no” to one!
For those who don’t know, a prenuptial agreement or a prenup is defined as “an agreement made between two people before marrying that establishes rights to property and support in the event of divorce or death,” per Merriam-Webster.
It’s basically an agreement that protects current and future assets, and many have called it a staple in the new world. But like we said, there are a bunch of celebrity couples who opted out of a prenuptial agreement.
From marriages that have continued to last, like Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell, to marriages that ended rather quickly like Jennifer Lopez and her first marriage to Cris Judd, we have a lot of examples of couples who said “no” to a prenup (and some explaining why).
Below, see which celebrity couples didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement before getting married.
Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez
So, erm, it seems Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez didn’t sign a pre-nup before tying the knot in 2022. Per People, amid their divorce in 2024, a lot of factors are unknown such as who will et what, what assets they share like homes and projects, and more.
Seth Rogen & Lauren Miller
While speaking with Howard Stern, Seth Rogen revealed he and Lauren Miller didn’t sign a prenup, and he doesn’t care if he has to shell out millions if they divorce. “Marriage can be expensive and if I lose millions then it’ll be the best millions I’ve spent,” he said, per EOnline.
They’ve been married since 2011.
Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker
While it was reported that Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker were working on a prenup, it wasn’t signed by the time they got married. However, per TMZ, sources claim they also considered to get a postnup, but it’s unclear if that happened either.
They’ve been married since 2022.
Kenya Moore & Marc Daly
The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore confirmed to TMZ that she and her ex Marc Daly, “unfortunately” didn’t sign a pre-nup. Moore and Daly were together from 2017 until their separation in 2021, and have been working on their divorce battle since.
Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale
In case you didn’t know, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale had no prenup in place before their 2002 wedding. They were together for 13 years, and divorced officially in 2016. Per USMagazine, because of their lack of a prenup, they ended up deciding on 50-50 joint custody, Rossdale didn’t ask for child support, and got less than 50 percent of all their combined assets.
Justin & Hailey Bieber
Per TMZ, it was confirmed that Justin and Hailey Bieber had no pre-nup of any kind for other wealth and assets.
They’ve been married since 2018.
Katy Perry & Russell Brand
Katy Perry and Russell Brand were only married from 2010 to 2012. But when their divorce happened, many expected a lengthy battle since they signed no prenup, but in a shocking turn of events, Brand agreed to walk away without receiving a cent of Perry’s fortune, per DailyMail.
Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey
During an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show back in 2020, Jessica Simpson said she wished she would’ve signed a prenup before her marriage to Nick Lachey. “I wish I would’ve signed a prenup. The funny thing is that Nick wanted me to sign a prenup but I was so offended. I’m like, ‘But we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives. We’re saying our vows to God and in front of all of our family and friends. This is never going to end,’ and we didn’t sign a prenup.”
According to the Mirror, she had to pay $12 million to Lachey after the divorce.
They were married from 2002 to 2006.
Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard
Another couple with no pre-nup is Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. Shepard recalled on Conan, per Page Six, that while he originally wanted one, it worked out for the best. “When we first started dating, I had more money than her and I owned the house that I lived in. And she said to me at one point, ‘Would you like a prenup?’ because we were getting married. And I said, ‘No, I don’t want a prenup,’ but I really wanted a prenup, really bad,” he said. “But the joke is now on her because she’s become much more successful than me and has much more money than me.”
They’ve been married since 2012.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
Did you know royals don’t have pre-nups? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed in 2018 without one, and not only that, Prince Harry went as far as to “reject” a prenup, per DailyMail.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been married since 2018.
Prince William & Kate Middleton
Speaking of royals not signing pre-nups, Prince William and Kate Middleton didn’t sign one either.
They married in 2011.
Mel & Robyn Gibson
Mel Gibson and Robyn Gibson didn’t sign a pre-nup during their 1980 nuptials. And when they divorced over 30 years later in 2011, per People, Robyn ended up taking half of his $850 million estate, and is “entitled to half of every future check Gibson receives for the rest of his life.”
Amber Heard & Johnny Depp
After their marriage from 2015 to 2017, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp had no pre-nup agreement, and this Heard was awarded $7 million in the settlement.
MacKenzie & Jeff Bezos
Per Town and Country, MacKenzie & Jeff Bezos were happily married for over 20 years, and when they got married in 1993, there was no pre-nup. Along with that, it seemed as though there was no postnup agreement, so when their divorce came around in 2019, she was awarded half of all of his assets.
Vanessa & Kobe Bryant
Vanessa and Kobe Bryant were married from 2001 until his death in 2020. They had no prenup in place, and after Kobe tragically passed away, Vanessa was awarded almost all of his $600 million fortune, per IBTimes.
Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi
Per OK, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi signed no pre-nup ahead of their 2008 wedding. They’ve been married since then, and even renewed their vows in early 2023, per CNN.
Madonna & Guy Ritchie
Madonna and Guy Ritchie were married from 2001 to 2008, and by the time of their divorce, Ritchie was rewarded $60 million in assets since there was no pre-nup, per SheKnows.
Jennifer Lopez & Cris Judd
In Jennifer Lopez’s first marriage to Cris Judd, they didn’t sign a pre-nup, which made things messy when they divorced less than a year later in 2001. Per Marie Claire, Judd was awarded around $14 million.
Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore
Another celebrity couple to say “no” to a prenup was one of the early 2000s it-couples: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. They wed in 2005, but sadly divorced in 2013, and when it was finalized the same year, Kutcher reportedly gave Moore a large settlement of over $90 million, per Page Six.
The-Dream & Christina Milian
The-Dream and Christina Milian were briefly married from 2009 to 2011, and because they had no pre-nup, Milian was awarded $4 million, per Essence.
Gabrielle Union & Chris Howard
For those who need a reminder, Gabrielle Union and Chris Howard were married from 2001 to 2006, and signed no pre-nup.
Union previously told Arsenio Hall per People, “The biggest difference between this and the last marriage will be a prenup — at my insistence. When you have your own stuff, you don’t need to worry about anyone else’s stuff. So everyone should go into the relationship knowing ‘I’m here for you and you’re here for me.’ And the reality is, I’ve never seen Dwyane balance a checkbook.”
She added, “I’ve got to protect my stuff. It’s the wave of the future, protecting your stuff.”
