As part of any awards show, there are winners and losers. And while being a nominee in these ultra-competitive awards is a victory by itself, many stars were taken by surprise this morning (either for the good or the bad) when the 2024 BAFTAs announced their nominations. From leaving out Lily Gladstone from the Leading Actress category for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon to nominating Jacob Elordi for Saltburn, movie fans were in for a whirlwind of emotions during the announcements.
“There’s no such thing as expected at BAFTA,” chair of BAFTA’s film committee Anna Higgs told Variety following the controversial release. “I think to play a guessing game with our expert members and where they can go, particularly in a year that’s so competitive, is really hard.”
To check out more snubs and surprises from the awards show, which will take place on Feb. 18 in London, England, scroll below! And be warned: your favorites might not have made the list!
Snub: Lily Gladstone
Lily Gladstone, who recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, was weirdly left off the list for BAFTA’s Lead Actress category. “That Lily Gladstone snub is painful,” wrote one user on X. “What are you doing, BAFTA?”
Snub: Jeffrey Wright
Emmy-winner Jeffrey Wright was also snubbed at the BAFTAs as he was not nominated for Best Actor for his touching role in American Fiction.
Snub: Charles Melton
Actor Charles Melton also shocked fans when he was not included in BAFTA’s Best Supporting Actor category for his work in May December. “Jacob Elordi nominated over Charles Melton? I did not see that coming,” one user wrote on X.
Snub: Leonardo DiCaprio
Alongside his co-star Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio was also not recognized for his work in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Snub: Andrew Scott
Fans were also shocked today to not find All of Us Strangers star Andrew Scott in the Best Actor category.
“The more I think about Andrew Scott’s BAFTA snub, especially considering how well All of Us Strangers did overall, the more outrageous it feels,” wrote one angry user on X. “How do you recognize the film in so many categories and ignore the man who holds it all together? It’s lunacy.”
Snub: Greta Gerwig
In another unexpected snub, Greta Gerwig was not nominated in BAFTA’s Best Director category for Barbie. In this awards season, Gerwig received Best Director nominations at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.
Snub: Yorgos Lanthimos
In another Best Director snub, Yorgos Lanthimos was surprisingly not nominated for Poor Things. Much like Gerwig, Lanthimos was also nominated for this year’s Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
Snub: Martin Scorsese
Speaking of directors who should’ve been nominated, Martin Scorsese also didn’t land a Best Director nod for Killers of the Flower Moon.
“Killers of the Flower [Moon] may or may not be the best movie of the year,” one user wrote on X. “But, to not even nominate Lily Gladstone, Leonardo Di Caprio & Martin Scorsese for a BAFTA award is baffling.”
Snub: ‘Barbie’
In addition to being the most-talked-about movie of the year, Barbie also received five nominations in the BAFTAs including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Original Screenplay. It didn’t, however, land in the Best Film category.
Snub: ‘Past Lives’
In another Best Film snub, Celine Song-directed Past Lives also failed to earn a nomination. It did, however, get nominated for Film Not in the English Language.
Surprise: Jacob Elordi
Saltburn star Jacob Elordi received his very first big nomination today in the Best Supporting Actor category in the BAFTAs. Talk about a surprise nod!
Surprise: Vivian Oparah
Vivian Oparah put Rye Lane on the awards show map today as she received the nomination for Leading Actress. “COME ON THROUGH VIVIAN OPARAH, BAFTA NOMINATED ACTRESS FOR RYE LANE! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾” one user wrote on X.
Surprise: Dominic Sessa
Dominic Sessa, who just won the Best Young Actor/Actress award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards for his work in The Holdovers, was not necessarily expected to receive a nod for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs. Despite the odds, however, the rising star got a nod in the category along some major Hollywood powerhouses.
Surprise: Teo Yoo
In another major surprise nod, Teo Yoo received a Leading Actor nomination for his role in Past Lives. “shout out to them for acknowledging Teo Yoo🙌,” wrote one user on X.
Surprise: Sandra Hüller
In one of the most surprising moments of today’s announcement, German actress Sandra Hüller received an impressive double nomination for Leading Actress for Anatomy of a Fall and Supporting Actress for The Zone of Interest. “best actress of the year,” one user wrote on X. Looks like the BAFTAs are in agreement!
