And the Oscar nomination goes to… who? The nominations for this year’s Oscars is officially here and there has been some major snubs and surprises.
2024 has been a competitive year for Hollywood with huge releases like Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers and Oppenheimer, which has largely dominated award season so far thanks to major wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
However, even these strong contenders have experienced some snubs in this year’s award shows and the Oscars looks set to follow the same pattern!
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the 2024 Oscar nominations with 13 nomination in total. Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, follows with 11 and Killers of the Flower Moon received 10 nominations.
Oppenheimer took home Best Picture awards at both of this season’s earlier award shows, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. The film’s director, Nolan, was also awarded at both shows. Oppenheimer lead Cillian Murphy and The Holdovers actor Paul Giamatti both won Best Actor Golden Globes in separate categories but Giamatti later beat Murphy to the podium for the Best Actor award at the Critics Choice Awards.
Despite many nominations, Barbie has yet to make its mark on award season. Meanwhile, even while Lily Gladstone takes home several very-deserved awards, her Killers of the Flower Moon co-star Leonardo DiCaprio experienced one of the biggest snubs of the year so far when he was not nominated for a SAG Award for his role as Ernest Burkhart.
Given that the Oscars is no doubt the biggest award show in Hollywood, and the most competitive, the snubs and surprises of 2024 are abundant.
To find out which movies and actors shockingly missed out on nominations — and which got some unexpected nods — keep scrolling!
Snub: Margot Robbie
Despite it enormous box office success, Barbie has fallen short at award season and Margot Robbie is the latest to take a hit. While Robbie could still take home a statue as a producer of the movie if it wins in the Best Picture category, she didn’t land a nomination for Best Actress.
Snub: Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwig was also seriously snubbed by the academy when she missed out on a Best Director nomination.
Gerwig could still win an award if Barbie wins in the Best Picture or Best Adapted Screenplay categories. It is also nominated in several acting categories and for production design.
Snub: Leonardo DiCaprio
Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated in 10 categories including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese and acting nominations for Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro but Leonardo DiCaprio failed to land a Best Actor nod.
Snub: May December
Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton all missed out on nominations for their hit movie which did secure a nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category.
Snub: Dua Lipa
Despite getting a Golden Globe and Grammy nomination for “Dance the Night” which appeared on the Barbie soundtrack, Dua Lipa won’t be recognized by the Academy this year.
Meanwhile, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and Mark Ronson’s “I’m Just Ken” did get nominations.
Snub: Greta Lee
Greta Lee’s glorious performance in Past Lives was snubbed by the Academy. The movie did get nominated in the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay category.
Snub: Penélope Cruz
Ferrari has experienced several snubs this award season and wasn’t nominated for any Oscars but we’re particularly surprised that Penélope Cruz‘s performance didn’t get a nod!
Snub: Saltburn
It’s the movie TikTok can’t stop talking about but Emerald Fennel’s Saltburn didn’t get one single nomination in this year’s Oscars.
Snub: The Color Purple
The Color Purple was almost entirely snubbed at this year’s Oscars but Danielle Brooks did manage to land a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
Surprise: America Ferrera
After missing out on a Golden Globe nomination, we’re pleasantly surprised to see America Ferrera get acknowledged at the Oscars.
Surprise: Annette Bening
Annette Bening did land a SAG nomination, and now an Oscar nod, as did her Nyad co-star, Jodie Foster. In a category as competitive as this year’s Best Actress category, we’re glad to see Bening in the running.
Surprise: Justine Triet
We’re very happy to see Justine Triet nominated in a highly competitive Best Director category, the only woman to be nominated in the category this year.
Anatomy of a Fall is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay for Triet’s script and a Best Actress nomination for Sandra Hüller.
Surprise: Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling’s Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Ken in Barbie comes as a welcome surprise given that the movie missed out on several key nominations for Gerwig and Robbie.
Surprise: Sterling K. Brown
We’re very happy to see Sterling K. Brown nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category after missing out on a Golden Globe nomination for his role in American Fiction.
The movie is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and a Best Actor nomination for Jeffrey Wright.
Surprise: Colman Domingo
Colman Domingo got a very deserved Best Actor nomination for his work in Rustin and we’re only surprised to see him in the category because the movie missed out on nominations in Every other Oscars category.
