For a long time, sleeping in separate beds as a couple was portrayed as the norm on television, until the Brady Bunch came along. Since then, the mere concept of sleeping in separate beds has seemed like a taboo amongst couples. Many see it as a sign that there’s trouble afoot in the marriage. While that can be the case for some, there’s also another argument to be made about it: many couples, including celebrity couples, say sleeping in separate beds has enhanced their marriage (and sleep schedule)!
LiveStrong discussed the many reasons why partners could sleep in separate rooms, such as sleeping disorders, loud snoring, sleep schedules being out of synch, and more. While the reasons are valid, many still wonder: “Is it actually beneficial to do so?”
The same outlet discussed the benefits with Kristie Overstreet, Ph.D., sexologist, psychotherapist, and creator of the Ideal Intimacy Method.
“When you have separate rooms, it also allows you to miss one another,” Overstreet said. “When you’re in separate rooms, it’s more likely you will sleep uninterrupted and have time for self-care, including reading, watching TV or anything just for you without interfering with or disturbing your partner.”
So it makes sense why so many celebrity couples have been repeatedly hopping on this self-care habit.
From political figures like Donald Trump and Melania Trump to iconic Hollywood couples like David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, so many celebrity couples have spoken about sleeping in separate beds.
While even more couples have discussed this, we’re going to focus on the couples still together as of July 2024.
Below, see which couples reportedly sleep in separate beds.
Martin von Haselberg & Bette Midler
Bette Midler revealed on July 2024 that she and her husband Martin von Haselberg have slept in separate bedrooms for 40 years, making it the secret to their happy marriage. She told Entertainment Tonight that he snores, and that “it’s been a fabulous ride.”
Catherine Martin & Baz Luhrmann
In a previous interview with Daily Mail in 2014, Baz Luhrmann discussed how he and his wife Catherine Martin decided to sleep in separate beds.
“We worked out a long time ago that we both need space. Things would become fraught,” Luhrmann said, adding that they decided to save their marriage by sleeping in their own beds, and even have their own floors in multiple homes.
Melania & Donald Trump
Melania and Donald Trump also allegedly sleep in separate beds. The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump by Mary Jordan alleged that “No matter which of his properties he is visiting, Trump sleeps in a separate bedroom that has been decorated to his taste — he favors darker colored walls and rugs, while Melania likes whites and light colors.”
Stormy Daniels corroborated this claim on May 2024, per OK.
Siri Daly & Carson Daly
Carson Daly revealed back in 2019, via People, that “I got sleep-divorced in September. We cited irreconcilable sleeping.” He added that the decision was made in the same year because of his sleep apnea, his wife Siri Daly’s pregnancy, and more.
Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick
Back in 2016, after over 20 years together, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick reportedly created a mega-mansion of their townhome, with his and her wings. So with that, they technically have separate beds, too (and their kids have access to both sides)! Per Us Weekly, it was reportedly due to their different cleanliness standards.
Victoria & David Beckham
Per USMagazine, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham reportedly have “his and her” wings of their mansion, meaning they also have separate beds.
Danielle & Kevin Jonas
Danielle and Kevin Jonas reportedly started sleeping in separate beds almost immediately after their wedding, due to Kevin’s snoring, per Glamour.
