While Hollywood may have the reputation of having short flings with breakups left and right, many celebrity couples have gone on to beat the odds and prove us all wrong. And, while we anxiously await for this Sunday’s Academy Awards, we’ve noticed that many of those long-lasting marriages belong to the night’s nominees.
From Emily Blunt and John Krasinski and Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey to Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, many of the night’s biggest nominees have had spouses who have championed and supported them for over 10 or even 20 years. Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, for example, has been married to his wife (and co-producer) Emma Thomas since 1997.
So, in honor of Sunday’s big night, we’re looking back at all the Hollywood-defying couples who could be taking home an Oscar at the award. And who knows, maybe we’ll see them all on the red carpet!
Cillian Murphy
Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy has been married to his wife, visual artist Yvonne McGuinness, since 2004. Together, the pair have two sons named Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16. “You’re my best friends and I love you so much,” Murphy said to all three in his EE BAFTA speech.
Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. and his wife/co-producer Susan Downey have been happily since 2005. Throughout the years, they’ve welcomed their kids Exton, 12, and Avri, 9.
While accepting his award for Best Supporting Actor at the SAG Awards recently, Downey Jr. gave his wife a special shout. “Why have I added my wife’s name to this list of otherwise super-talented artists that I have learned so much from, up-close, over these last 40 years?” he asked the audience. “It’s because for 22 years she has flawlessly portrayed a sane and rational individual who is happily married to an actor.”
Annette Bening
In one of the longest marriages on this list, Annette Bening and Warren Beatty have been together since 1992. Together, they’ve welcomed four kids Stephen, 32, Benjamin, 29, Isabel, 27, and Ella, 23.
“We want the same things; we have four children and they’re incredible human beings,” Bening said in an interview with the Today Show a few years ago. “Having that shared purpose also is part of it.”
Emily Blunt
Forming one unstoppable power couple, Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt has been married to fellow actor John Krasinski since 2010. The pair, who share kids Hazel, 9, and Violet, 7, have said countless sweet things about each other over the years.
“I am going to share this completely with my husband, John, because the entire experience of doing this with you has completely pierced my heart directly,” Blunt said in her acceptance speech for their movie A Quiet Place at the 2019 SAG Awards. “You are a stunning filmmaker. I am so lucky to be with you and to have done this film with you.”
Colman Domingo
Best Actor nominee Colman Domingo made us swoon when he shared the story of how he met his husband, Raúl Domingo. The pair have been married since 2014.
Sharing their love story at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in 2022, the Rustin star said they saw each other for the first time after a chance encounter outside of Walgreens. “A few days later, I’m on Craigslist trying to buy a used computer to help with my writing. I went to the home screen and you know, they have ‘missed connections’ things like ads, so I would read them because I’m a romantic. I go to the second page of missed connections and it said, ‘Saw you outside of Walgreens, Berkeley,'” Domingo remembered, per Harper’s Bazaar.
Carey Mulligan
In a power couple that encompasses both the movie and music worlds, Carey Mulligan has been married to Mumford & Sons lead singer Marcus Mumford since 2012. The pair are parents to daughter Evelyn Grace, 7, and son Wilfred, 5, and welcomed their youngest child in October 2023.
Mulligan and Mumford have a sweet love story of their own; the two met for the first time as pen pals when they were just 10 and 12 years old. “I wrote in my diary that he was the nicest, the kindest person I’d ever met and I gave him 9 1/2 out of 10,” the Maestro nominee said in an appearance at the SmartLess podcast.
“I also wrote in my diary that he definitely wasn’t boyfriend material,” Mulligan added. “Not that I’d ever had a boyfriend at that time! But I decided that he was not it.” Years later, he became husband material instead!
Jodie Foster
Oscar winner Jodie Foster is up for her potential third award this Sunday. In addition to a long-standing career, Foster has also been married to her wife, director Alexandra Hedison, since 2014.
“Loving you is easy as cake,” Hedison wrote on Instagram on Foster’s last birthday.
Mark Ruffalo
Mark Ruffalo and his wife, Sunrise Coigney, have been happily married since 2000. The pair share kids Keen, 22, Bella, 18, and Odette, 16.
“[This is] for my wife, Sunrise, who’s been with me through all of it,” Ruffalo said of his family during his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star ceremony, per People. “Who believed in me more than anybody.”
Sterling K. Brown
As one of the most beautiful couples in Hollywood, actors Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe have been a happy married couple since 2007. The pair, who first tied the knot when they eloped in 2006, have two sons, Andrew, 12, and Amaré, 7.
“Me and my wife we laugh a lot,” Brown said in an appearance on Sherri Shepard’s talk show earlier this year. “We’ll be married 18 years in March and one of the secrets to that is being able to laugh with and at each other.”
Ryan Gosling
While we don’t have a confirmed date for when Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling tied the knot, or even confirmation that they did in the first place, the Barbie star and Mendes have been together for years. The private couple, who share daughters Esmeralda, 8, and Amada, 7, have been together since 2011.
In Gosling’s acceptance of his Golden Globe award for La La Land in 2017, he proved he was even more romantic than Noah in The Notebook. “I’d like to try and thank one person properly, and to say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” the actor said, per Glamour.
“If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today,” he continued. “So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmerelda, I love you. And if I may, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes.”
Martin Scorsese
Oppenheimer Martin Scorsese and his wife Helen Morris have been married since 1999. Morris, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease over 30 years ago, shares daughter Francesca, 24, with the director.
“I find that her strength is something … I’ve never seen such strength like that in a person and such a fortitude and a positive way of approaching life under the worst of circumstances,” Scorsese once said of his wife in This Life of Mine with James Corden, per People.
Christopher Nolan
Speaking of directors, Christopher Nolan has been married to his wife Emma Thomas since 1997. Together, the two are parents to their kids Magnus, Flora, Rory, and Oliver.
“Emma Thomas, my partner in life and art, I love you,” Nolan said as he accepted the award for Best Director at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Yorgos Lanthimos
Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos has also been a longtime husband after he married his wife, actress Ariane Labed, in 2013. As fans of Lanthimos know well, Labed has made an appearance in a few of his movies including The Lobster and Alps.
