An invite to the Met Gala is one of the most sought after tickets in the world of celebrities and while we never know exactly who we will see on the red carpet, there are some stars who have become red carpet staples. From Blake Lively to Kim Kardashian, we love to see these Met Gala regulars.
However, some of the people we expected to see on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet, opted to sit the event out this year.
On May 6, some of the biggest stars walked the red carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art dressed to fit the “The Garden of Time” dress code, which was chosen to celebrate the theme of the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
The celebrity co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala are Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth, and stars on the red carpet included Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman. But some of our favorite stars didn’t attend!
Here are all the surprising stars who skipped the 2024 Met Gala!
Rihanna
Rihanna might be one of the most daring stars on the Met Gala red carpet when she does show up, but we weren’t treated to her look this year. According to People, the singer came down with the flu before the event and had to sit it out after flying into New York to attend.
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway’s The Idea of You co-star Nicholas Galitzine made his Met Gala debut in 2024 but she opted to stay home after delivering one of the best looks of 2023 with this Versace gown.
Margot Robbie
After a hectic year of Barbie promo, we would have loved one last Barbie look from Margot Robbie. However, the actress revealed in a January interview with Deadline that she would be stepping out of the public eye for a while.
“I also think everyone’s probably sick of the sight of me for now. I should probably disappear from screens for a while,” she said.
Billy Porter
Billy Porter has been known to rock the Met Gala red carpet in many jaw-dropping looks but he confirmed to E! News in April that he will skip the 2024 event to focus on himself after losing his mother in February.
“I just lost my mom,” Porter said. “I have to take care of myself, so I’m doing that. And that means not going to the party sometimes.”
He added, “daddy’s tired,” he stated, “I can’t do everything.”
Jared Leto
After famously attending the 2023 Met Gala dressed as Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, Jared Leto did not attend in 2024 due to his hectic touring schedule.
“I will be there in spirit with my head and my cat,” he told E! News on April 1, “wishing everybody a beautiful night.”
Blake Lively
Blake Lively is often one of the best-dressed stars at the Met Gala and after skipping the event in 2023, we were seriously hoping she would be back with a bang. Maybe next year!
Taylor Swift
Fans were eagerly hoping Taylor Swift would make her Met Gala return in 2024 and maybe even walk the red carpet with Travis Kelce but she missed the event.
Reports suggested that the singer is currently focused on the upcoming European leg of her “Eras Tour.”
Travis Kelce
Like his girlfriend, Travis Kelce didn’t even make a solo appearance at the 2024 Met Gala. The NFL star has never attended in the past but as one of the most talked about sports stars of 2023, we were hoping this year would be his debut!
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga put on a whole performance with multiple outfit changes at the 2019 Met Gala but after delivering such a show, she hasn’t come back.
Tom Holland
Tom Holland has yet to make his Met Gala debut but with girlfriend Zendaya acting as co-chair of the 2024 Met Gala, we were seriously hoping to see him on the red carpet but sadly did not.
Timothée Chalamet
After an impress, fashion-filled press tour promoting back to back hits Wonka and Dune 2, we were really hoping Timothée Chalamet would follow up on his one and only Met Gala appearance but he didn’t make it to the event.
Bella Hadid
Despite making her return to the public eye in recent weeks, Bella Hadid let her older sister, Gigi Hadid, represent the family alone at the 2024 Met Gala.
Hailey Bieber
Hailey Bieber always puts on a chic display at the Met Gala and we almost don’t know the carpet without her!
Anya Taylor-Joy
We expected Anya Taylor-Joy to support her Furiosa co-star Chris Hemsworth during his co-chairing duties but she didn’t show up.
Emily Blunt
Admittedly, we totally understand Emily Blunt’s choice to skip the Met Gala after a year of promoting her Oscar-winning movie Oppenheimer.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish has admitted to not loving her past Met Gala experiences so we assume she didn’t feel too sad to miss this year’s event!
Olivia Rodrigo
Olivia Rodrigo is in the midst of her Guts Tour so probably couldn’t take the time out of her schedule for the Met Gala.
Khloe Kardashian
Khloe Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in 2022 but, surprisingly, hasn’t been back since! Luckily, we still had plenty of Kardashian representation.
Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker
New parents Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are likely too busy with their baby boy to follow up on their 2022 Met Gala debut.
Pedro Pascal
Pedro Pascal, one of Hollywood’s most stylish men, also didn’t attend the 2024 Met Gala.
Emma Stone
We were hoping to see Oscar-winner Emma Stone back on the Met Gala red carpet after a showstopping 2022 apperance but she has not been back since.
Kate Moss
Kate Moss walked the red carpet alongside her daughter, Lila, in 2023 but the mother-daughter duo didn’t return this year.
Austin Butler
Austin Butler’s girlfriend Kaia Gerber walked the red carpet solo while he stayed home.
