A recent celebrity who has become a staple on the Met Gala red carpet is the ever-so-beloved Gabrielle Union. Ever since she made her Met Gala debut in 2014, fans have excitedly waited for what she will wear next, whether it be a more simple and elegant look or something that took literally over 1000 hours to make. Union is a red carpet queen, and we love it when she graces us with a new look. Recently, Union revealed that she’s actually saved all seven of her Met Gala looks for her daughter Kaavia.
In the interview with People, she said, “So I have a storage that’s just full of things that I’m like, oh, I want to be able to tell this story or how I felt wearing this,” she said. “So it started with me putting in this beautiful display case my first Met ball outfit.”
She added, “I was also in the museum, and then I realized maybe I don’t have to display it in my home, but I can put it in a temperature-controlled space that preserves the material and the memories. So even if [Kaavia] never wants to wear any of it, she will have this little bit of her mom and the stories that go with it.” And ahead of the 2024 Met Gala tonight, we have our fingers crossed we’ll see another iconic look from her. Check out her Met Gala looks over the years, below:
2014: “Charles James: Beyond Fashion”
For her Met Gala debut, Union donned this black, feathered Prada two-piece for the theme Charles James: Beyond Fashion, which was all about honoring the sculptural designs of mid-20th century fashion designer Charles James. So, unique silhouettes were the name of the game!
2015: “China: Through the Looking Glass”
For the 2015 theme “China: Through The Looking Glass,” the dress code was all about looking to the Chinese art and culture that influenced Western fashion. For the occasion, Union kept things simple with a purple Zac Posen gown.
2018: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”
Inspired by the visual symbolism of Catholicism, the 2018 Met Gala made everyone push boundaries. Union arrived in a vibrant yellow Prabal Gurung gown that was such a beautiful take on the theme.
2019: “Camp: Notes on Fashion”
The 2019 Met Gala was all about wearing the most exaggerated gowns and looks you can find, and Union donned this sparkling Dundas kimono look.
2021: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”
Union’s look at the 2021 Met Gala was one of the most iconic because this Iris van Herpen gown took 1,400 hours to make, per W.
2022: “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”
At the 2022 Met Gala, themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” Union made a statement with her custom Versace gown. It made a commentary on the historical exploitation and contributions of Black and brown people during the Gilded Age in America.
Speaking with Vogue at the event, Union explained, “This country is built off of our backs, our blood, sweat, and tears.” She pointed out that the red crystals symbolized the blood shed by Black and brown people during the Gilded Age, a time when a few amassed great wealth at their expense.
2023: “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”
Both Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade rocked leather Prada looks for the 2023 Met Gala.
2024: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”
Gabrielle Union looked so chic at the 2024 Met Gala in this ombré silver, green and blue Michael Kors dress that gave us major mermaidcore vibes.
