Although it may not be fair, or accurate, women in many industries are told their opportunities, and their success, will only dwindle as they get older. And, as women continue to break through those stereotypes, many of our favorite celebrities, from Salma Hayek to Jane Fonda, are proving there’s no such thing as “too old” to be successful.
In Meryl Streep‘s acceptance speech at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival when she received an honorary Palme d’Or, for example, Streep said getting older in the industry was always a fear.
“Thirty-five years ago, when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three. I was about to turn 40 and I thought that my career was over,” she admitted to the crowd, via People. “And that was not an unrealistic expectation for actresses at that time.”
But, luckily for her, and the rest of the world who watched her, her Oscar-winning career was only beginning.
And, much like Streep, many other stars over 40 showed up to Cannes proving they’re careers and record-breaking success are only beginning. Plus, they looked incredible on the carpet too!
