It’s refreshing to see stars using their celebrity for a good cause. Bass is definitely doing that with his work for gay rights, along with other nonprofit organizations such as the Environmental Media Association, which works with celebrities to promote sustainable lifestyles.
Be you
Bass wears his convictions well, not only fighting for gay rights, but also for the rights of other disenfranchised/under-served communities. He created the Lance Bass Foundation in 2001, a nonprofit organization designed to meet the health needs of children from low-income households. He also established a special education endowment at The University of Southern Mississippi, which helps students who are planning a career in special education.
It’s about visibility
Speaking about his wedding, Bass told E! that neither he nor Michael Turchin will be wearing a wedding dress, but it’s the No. 1 question the couple have fielded. “It’s not even a joke; half of people are not even joking,” says Bass. “That shows you how far we have to go with people’s ignorance about the gay community.”
Love and accept people
Bass still attends church, though he considers himself nondenominational.
On gay sex
Bass’ husband Turchin agrees with Bass on this front, saying, “I’m not gonna ask you about your sex life and what you like to do. Why is it such a casual question?”
On speaking out
His commitment to equality makes Bass an asset and ally to many causes, including poverty and disaster relief and animal rescue organizations.
On helping others
Bass knows what he’s talking about here. From pop star to cosmonaut-in-training and now film producer, he has already had a couple of careers, but his advocacy remains a key focus.
On coming out
He may not want to lead every parade, but Bass is definitely a leader. After their wedding aired on E!, the couple flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Bass oversaw a mass wedding for 100 couples of all orientations as part of a “Love is Love” event sponsored by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Nothing’s black & white
Bass’ advocacy efforts speak to the growing population that recognizes the importance of honoring life’s gray areas.
There’s nothing wrong
By allowing the world an inside look at their wedding, Bass and Turchin hope to increase awareness and help diminish the negative stigma still associated with gay marriage in many communities. We have to tip our hat to this little tidbit, though: In a gentle nod to traditionalists, the bridesmaids at Bass and Turchin’s wedding all wore white.
