‘The Staircase’
Did wealthy North Carolina author Michael Peterson murder his wife? You be the judge. The very best true-crime series ever made, no contest. The twists and turns from episode to episode will have you shrieking in both delight and terror.
‘Paradise Lost’
Three teenagers are accused of killing three little boys in a small Arkansas town. Three insanely riveting movies tell the story of the trial and its aftermath. So many entertaining characters they make the denizens of Manitowoc County look boring.
‘The Imposter’
A French con man convinces a Texas family he’s their missing 16-year-old son. As in any good thriller, you will find yourself rooting for an insane criminal. This article in The New Yorker on the case is equally bananas.
‘The Cheshire Murders’
A doctor’s wife and two daughters are raped and murdered during a home invasion. “Please don’t let it be the husband,” you will whisper to yourself for the entire length of the movie. This one’s devastating.
‘There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane’
A mom driving the wrong way on the highway kills eight people, including her daughter and nieces. There are drugs and alcohol in her system. Her husband says that’s impossible, she’d never do such a thing. What do you say?
‘Capturing the Friedmans’
A happy suburban family disintegrates when the dad and one of three sons are accused of some horrifying crimes. This movie is so creepy and awful you may never sleep again after watching it. You’ve been warned.
‘The Jinx’
Just in case you were busy re-watching Gilmore Girls and missed the last true-crime miniseries to rivet the nation. Robert Durst’s wife disappears, then everyone who might know something about the disappearance winds up dead.
‘Vanity Fair Confidential’
When you can’t get your mitts on a movie or miniseries, try this show on Investigation Discovery. It’s like Dateline, but all the stories come from Vanity Fair magazine, so they’re especially juicy.
