Ghosts, vampires, witches: Readers can’t get enough. We talked to author Meg Cabot about why.
A chat with Meg Cabot
How did Cabot get interested in writing paranormal romance? “I was working in a dorm at NYU, and we had some students who thought they saw a ghost. The building was very, very old, and they had a high population of students. We did have a high incident of death in a population that young with suicides and accidental deaths. Sometimes, I would start to wonder myself, ‘Did they see a ghost?’ I started believing.” And so was born her now-famed Mediator series.

“I started writing the Mediator series back in 2000, so it was one of the early ones,” said Cabot.
Why do we love paranormal romance?
“We live in a society that’s very stressful,” Cabot said, “and there’s something alluring about being able to read about something that isn’t true. Then, there’s that temptation that maybe it is true. We’re being taken out of our daily problems to read about something that’s fun and titillating and certainly romantic. We hope it’s not going to happen to us, but there’s always an element of mystery and thrill — but also the otherworldly element. So combine all those elements in a perfect way, it’s thrilling and so much not part of our real world.”
Why do we still love vampires?
“The whole idea of sucking blood, to me, is creepy,” said Cabot, “but I know just as many readers find it titillating. The idea that someone’s taking something from you, it’s very sexual, certainly if it’s a hot enough guy or woman, if it’s your taste. There’s something very irresistible about that.”
All about ‘Remembrance’
Cabot said, “So many readers started reading the Mediator series when they came out in the early 2000s, and they ask me what happened to the characters. I thought rather than writing more about the characters in high school it would be interesting to write about the adults now so there could actually be sex. They’re in their 20s, and they’ve moved out of their parents’ homes. Now the readers who read the original books can read about these characters as adults.”
Does Cabot believe in ghosts?
She’s got a supernatural story of her own. She said, “My dad had just passed away, and I kept seeing him everywhere out of the corner of my eye. I mentioned it to my brother, and he said it was happening to him, too. Is that something that happens when someone you love dies? What happens to people after they pass away? Do they hang around?” Maybe truth is stranger than fiction.
