Although Charlize Theron nearly made it down the aisle twice — with Stuart Townsend, whom she dated for nine years, and more recently to Sean Penn, whom she was engaged to until last summer — the stunning star has said marriage isn’t a top priority for her. “I’ll be the first to say, here on your show, marriage was never something that was important to me,” she told Piers Morgan in 2012. Theron says she’s not sure what her aversion to marriage is, but many speculate it has to do with her parents’ troubled past.
Eva Mendes
For most women, being married to Ryan Gosling sounds like a dream come true. But Eva Mendes, who has been with Gosling since 2011 and shares a daughter with the actor, the institution of marriage is a bit too old fashioned. “We did it for land originally. How unromantic is that?” she revealed on Chelsea Lately, adding, “I actually think it’s really sexy to be with someone in your 50s and 60s and be like, ‘That’s my boyfriend.’ I think husband and wife is just… very unsexy.”
Diane Kruger
Diane Kruger has been coupled up with actor Joshua Jackson for roughly a decade, but it’s doubtful the two will ever tie the knot. After having a bad experience with marriage when she was younger, Kruger has been candid about the fact she isn’t keen on getting hitched. “Without sounding pessimistic, I learned that I don’t believe in marriage,” she said. “I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart. There’s no paper that will make you stay. A guy friend of mine said, and it made a lot of sense, that people should get married at the end of the road, not at the beginning.”
Evangeline Lilly
Evangeline Lilly met longtime boyfriend Norman Kali on the set of Lost, and the couple now has a 4-year-old son and a brand-new baby born late last year. Still, don’t expect wedding bells in their near future. Lilly, who was married once before, doesn’t see the point. As for marrying Kali, she told Ocean Drive Magazine in 2015. “Emotionally, neither of us really feels the need for it. We love each other today, and we hope we’ll love each other tomorrow. I don’t believe in forever promises. I don’t think it’s realistic.”
Chelsea Handler
Despite a string of high-profile relationships — including Comcast Entertainment Group CEO, Ted Harbert and, if rumors are true, celebrity chef Bobby Flay — comedienne Chelsea Handler says it is doubtful she will ever wind up with a ring on her finger. “I don’t know that I’m marriage material,” she told More magazine in 2012. “I don’t know if I would ever want to be someone’s wife. It makes breaking up much more complicated.”
Diane Keaton
When it comes to Hollywood hookups, Diane Keaton is kind of a legend. Warren Beatty? Check. Al Pacino? Check. Homegirl’s got game, for sure. But, she told More.com, she has zero interest in marriage. “I’m attracted to men, and I love playing around with them. But a life shared together? That’s a different world. I think you have to be somebody who can compromise and be realistic. I could never do it. Ever.”
Kristin Davis
While it would undoubtedly make her Sex and the City alter ego, Charlotte York, blow a fuse, Kristin Davis has been frank about the fact she’d be totally content if she never walked down the aisle. “I don’t want to get married,” she has said. “I was never one of those little girls. It is not that I wouldn’t, but I don’t see that I must do it or be unhappy. I don’t know if I’ll ever get married. I’m perfectly happy with my single self.”
Goldie Hawn
Goldie Hawn may not be married, but she does boast one of the longest and most successful relationships in Hollywood — she and Kurt Russell have been together since 1983, when they connected on the set of Swing Shift. As to why she doesn’t feel the need to make it official, Hawn told CBS This Morning, “The question is ‘Why [get married]?’ It’s not ‘Why not?’ We’re in love. I wake up every morning. I love being with him. He brings me coffee. I give him a kiss. It’s ‘good morning.’ We love each other. We fight the way people are supposed to fight. We love our lives together.”
Kylie Minogue
Pop star Kylie Minogue has been dating British actor Joshua Sasse since last year, and by all accounts, the couple is very happy together. That doesn’t make it any more likely they’ll end up as husband and wife, though, since Minogue has said marriage is “lower on her list.” She explained, “I need to know I can step outside this room. I won’t, but I do need to know that mentally I have space ad freedom. Others would want to know they had those strong foundations, but I’m just a different makeup I guess.”
Oprah Winfrey
By now, everyone knows Oprah has been in a loving and long-term relationship with Stedman Graham since 1986 — which means, naturally, she has been asked why they’ve remained unmarried a million times. “I’m not a traditional woman and I haven’t had a traditional life, and I think that had Stedman and I gotten married, we certainly wouldn’t have stayed married. I’ve taught him to be non-traditional. But the very idea of what it means to be a wife and the responsibility and sacrifice that carries… I wouldn’t have held that very well,” she told ITV‘s Lorrain Kelly.
Lauren Graham
First of all, how adorable are Lauren Graham and her Parenthood co-star, Peter Krause, together? The two have been dating since 2010 and could not be any cuter as a couple. Does that mean wedded bliss will be their fate? Jury’s still out. “I don’t know. We are very happy as we are, and I never have a good answer for this question,” she said on The Ellen Degeneres Show, adding, “It’s good the way it is.”
Sheryl Crow
Any way you look at it, Sheryl Crow is a pioneer. In music, obviously, but also in her approach to parenting (she is raising two adopted sons on her own) and relationships. “I don’t think marriage is the end-all-be-all,” she shared with E! Online. “It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces. I had always gone out with guys who were highly successful, which would seem like it would put me at an equal level, but what ends up happening is one of you becomes smaller — and it was always me.”
Susan Sarandon
Confession: It kind of broke our hearts when Susan Sarandon split from longtime partner Tim Robbins. But true to form for Sarandon, the two were never married and amicably went separate ways. On why the couple never considered marriage in the first place, Sarandon said, “I’ve always like the idea of choosing to be with somebody. I thought that if you didn’t get married, you wouldn’t take each other for granted as easily.”
Sarah Silverman
While everyone was convinced Sarah Silverman was going to marry Jimmy Kimmel when the couple dated from 2002 to 2009, the relationship ended without a ring. Silverman has had a string of relationships since and is currently involved with Welsh actor Michael Sheen. When tabloid news reports surfaced claiming Silverman was begging for Sheen to pop the question, Silverman took to Twitter, firing back, “Why would I want the govt involved in my love life? Ew. It’s barbaric.” She also explicitly stated, “I will never get married.”
