These musicians like to get very romantic — with themselves.
Hailee Steinfeld “Love Myself”
Apparently, Steinfeld don’t need no stinkin’ man to get her groove on. Her song “Love Myself” is all about satisfying herself after being dumped.
With lyrics like “Keeping that tempo right without you, yeah,” “Pictures in my mind on replay/I’m gonna touch the pain away/I know how to scream my own name” and “I’ll take it nice and slow/Feeling good on my own without you, yeah/Got me speaking in tongues/The beautiful, it comes without you, yeah,” it’s clear it won’t take her time to get over being jilted.
Nicki Minaj & Beyoncé “Feeling Myself”
Minaj and Beyoncé are feeling themselves in more ways than one.
Not only are they full of self-confidence, but they’ve got DJ Diddles on the ones and twos.
“And I’m feelin’ myself, jack rabbit/Feelin’ myself, back off/Cause I’m feelin’ myself, jack off,” Minaj raps in the lyrics, as Beyoncé rhythmically says “I’m feeling myself” repeatedly.
Jackson Browne “Rosie”
Can’t find rock icon Jackson Browne on a Friday night? That’s because he’s got a hot date with Ms. Palm.
“Rosie, you’re all right, you wear my ring/When you hold me tight, Rosie, that’s my thing/When you turn out the light I got to hand it to me/Looks like it’s me and you again tonight, Rosie,” he croons in the legendary song.
As YouTube user Erik Leiken so aptly puts it, “This is the most beautiful song about violating yourself that I’ve ever heard.”
Britney Spears “Touch of My Hand”
She may be a pop icon, but even Spears gets lonely and has to make a date with Palmela Handerson every now and then, according to her song “Touch of my Hand.”
“‘Cause I just discovered/Imagination’s taking over/Another day without a lover/The more I come to understand/The touch of my hand,” she sings.
And she’s a very thorough self-lover.
“From the small of my back and the arch of my feet/Lately I’ve been noticin’ the beautiful me/I’m all in my skin and I’m not gonna wait/I’m into myself in the most precious way,” she belts out in another verse.
Pink “Fingers”
Have insomnia? Pink has the antidote.
“When it’s late at night and you’re fast asleep/I let my fingers do the walking/I press record I become a fiend/And no one else is watching/I let my fingers do the walking,” she sings in “Fingers.”
Chuck Berry “My Ding A Ling”
I dare you to sing this song without giggling.
“When I was little boy in grammar school/Always went by the very best rule/But every time the bell would ring/You’d catch me playing with my ding-a-ling.”
And not only was Berry playing with his ding-a-ling, he’s convinced everyone else was, too.
“This here song it ain’t so sad/the cutest little song you ever had/those of you who will not sing? You must be playin’ with your own ding-a-ling/My ding-a-ling/Your ding-a-ling, your ding-a-ling/We saw you playin’ with your ding-a-ling.”
Charli XCX “Body of My Own”
Charli XCX has someone she can do it with, but she’d rather just take matters into her own hands.
“Don’t need you/My touch is better/I’m rollin’ much harder/Lights out/On my own/Got my darkness/I’m into myself/Don’t need you…’Cause I can make it feel just like I’m hanging on/Yeah I can do it better when I’m all alone,” she sings.
FKA twigs “Kicks”
How does FKA twigs cope with her hottie fiancé, Robert Pattinson, being away? Just fine, thank you.
“So I tell myself/It’s cool to get my kicks like you/Just like you/I just touch myself/And say, I’ll make my own damn way/Own damn way/Tell me what do I do when you’re not here?/Tell me what do I do?/Baby it’s clear,” go the lyrics to her song “Kicks.”
Green Day “Longview”
Bored? Unmotivated? Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong has the perfect solution! Just tickle your own pickle — it’s what he does, according to the lyrics for “Longview.”
“Bite my lip and close my eyes/Take me away to paradise,” he sings.
And those pesky old wives’ tales that say you’ll go blind? Meh, he’s got you covered on that, too.
“Some say, ‘Quit or I’ll go blind’/But it’s just a myth,” the lyrics proclaim.
Divinyls “I Touch Myself”
Ah, this one is a classic.
“I don’t want anybody else/When I think about you, I touch myself/Ooh, I don’t want anybody else/Oh no, oh no, oh no,” Chrissy Amphlett — R.I.P. — coos to the lucky guy she lusted after.
The Police “Be My Girl — Sally”
The Police are all about their girl Sally, who just happens to be a blow-up doll.
“She came all wrapped in cardboard, all pink and shriveled down/A breath of air was all she needed to make her lose that frown/I took her to the bedroom and pumped her with some life/And later in a moment/That girl became my wife/And so I sit her in the corner/And sometimes stroke her hair/And when I’m feeling naughty/I blow her up with air,” Sting sings in the song.
