The first season of The Real Housewives of Potomac brought a cavalcade of tension with it on issues of race, sexuality, gender roles and of course, etiquette. There will undoubtedly be more of the same in Season 2, but probably, in the spirit of Real Housewives, amplified by about a million.
More conversations on race
Last season, the ladies quarreled regularly about being biracial, the behavior of white and black men, if being black and Jewish is a thing (it is) and whose children will check what box when it’s time to check boxes. On Twitter, fans have pointed out that The Real Housewives of Atlanta, another show whose cast is entirely composed of women of color, almost never discusses race, but RHOP has been on it since its first episode. Katie, Robyn and Gizelle fought all the way up until the end of the reunion, so there’s no reason to think they’d sit down and hash things out before another season starts.
Robyn and Juan
Robyn Dixon and her relationship with her ex-husband Juan were the source of much curiosity in Season 1. We first saw a currently divorced Robyn romping around in her wedding dress, which, given that this is part of the Real Housewives franchise, is pretty normal. Robyn and Juan are still living together, and during the reunion, she told Andy Cohen that she wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of re-marrying Juan, although she’s not in love with him. The odds are pretty good that the drama around these two will escalate next season, unless Juan disappears altogether, which is also totally possible.
Katie and Andrew
One of more exhausting trends in the first season of RHOP was Katie Rost’s seemingly never-ending quest for a ring from her boyfriend, Andrew. It took up virtually the entire season, finally culminating in a proposal in the finale. At the reunion, though, Katie told Andy that the engagement was off, which came as a relief to her castmates, who apparently thought that trolling for an engagement was a bad idea the entire time. (Why did no one mention that before?) Do we think Andrew is gone for good? Or will he resurface in Season 2 like one of those Whac-A-Mole games? Will Katie have a new boyfriend? Maybe she’ll blog about it.
Ashley and Karen duel
A large part of me is hoping for an actual duel, complete with swords, between Karen and Ashley, who started off being nice-ish to one another and, as of the reunion, are plotting each other’s doom. There are basically two ways their fight could go next season: Either they pretend it never happened and decide to ignore each other, or it continues to spiral out of control until Ashley kidnaps Karen’s daughter and they run far away from Potomac.
Katie continues to be black and Jewish
For some reason, the fact that Katie is a black Jew has become a storyline on RHOP. It’s kind of good, in that it brings awareness to the fact that Jews of color exist, and also not good, because Gizelle insists on making a spectacle out of it. I expect that it’ll continue to come up next season, along with questions about which boxes Katie’s kids will check.
Tripping
In the traveling sense, of course. A staple of the Real Housewives franchise is the girls’ trip, during which we can likely expect lots and lots of screaming. This season of RHOP brought the ladies together on a trip to Ashley’s Delaware beach house, where almost everyone behaved horribly. Can you imagine an international adventure with this bunch? There will probably be one in Season 2, so I’d advise you to start readying yourselves now.
A new cast member?
It’s not a guarantee, but it is always a possibility that one of the original cast members will bail or be asked to leave, and Bravo will have to replace her. Who do you think would be the most likely to get cut?
Babies for Ashley?
This season, we heard about Ashley’s desire to have a baby, and her husband Michael’s desire to not breed until after their restaurant was on its feet. The last episode before the reunion saw them discussing the issue rather tensely, which is likely to continue into Season 2, because reality TV loves a conflict over potential children.
Karen becomes persona non grata
On the reunion, Karen’s castmates seemed to be quite over her, especially Ashley and Charrisse. She was also called out for not actually being the “grande dame of Potomac.” Her inability to correlate etiquette with treating people nicely definitely has her co-stars on edge, and although it’s unlikely that she’d actually get shut out of things (she does make excellent TV), maybe we can look forward to some sturdy telling off.
Gizelle and a dude?
Gizelle was seeing a guy for a second in Season 1, but it got lost quickly in the rest of the show’s drama, or maybe I just forgot about it. When, on the reunion, Gizelle put Ashley in the position of defending her husband’s sexuality yet again, Ashley retaliated by asking Gizelle where her man was. Next season, maybe we’ll see Gizelle in a relationship, since it seems to be the key to staying relevant on this show.
Charrisse makes a decision about Eddie
Charrisse had two storylines this season — fighting with Gizelle and being mysterious in regard to her relationship with her husband, Eddie, who lives in another state because he’s a very important basketball coach. Another revelation at the reunion was that Charrisse and Eddie aren’t speaking right now, so either we’re getting a divorce storyline in Season 2 (in which case, I look forward to Charrisse busting out again) or the two will reconcile.
