The act of posting a picture of her daughter on Instagram puts Abraham in the middle of a firestorm, sometimes for good reason, other times, not so much.
The pole
The internet couldn’t wait to jump on Abraham’s Snapchat-turned-Instagram post of Sophia on a pole at the playground. Is she impersonating a stripper? Does the caption imply something sexual? Was that Abraham’s intention? It’s apparently been decided that yes, Abraham meant to turn a seemingly innocuous photo of her daughter into an advertisement for some kind of gentleman’s club.
The bathing suit
Should a mother be allowed to wear a bathing suit in front of her child? If the answer is yes, should said bathing suit reveal any actual parts of the mother’s body? Instagram seemed confident that no, Abraham should not wear this bathing suit in front of her daughter, because apparently, being confident will screw up your kid forever.
Sophia versus Nicki Minaj
Ugh. If you don’t remember Abraham and Nicki Minaj’s Twitter feud that eventually included Sophia, you are extremely lucky. This post of Sophia getting in on the ugliness didn’t so much spark debate as it did ire, but it did remind us of something called boundaries that are super useful in parenting.
Picture day
Sophia wore makeup to take this first grade picture, and Instagram basically imploded. Should a 7-year-old be allowed to wear makeup? Sophia’s school didn’t think so, but her mother thought it was totally fine.
Advertising
Advertising on Instagram is a big part of how reality stars make money, and Abraham has gotten a lot of flak for letting Sophia model these shoes. Other Teen Mom stars have incorporated their kids into their advertising, but the debate here seems to be about whether or not Sophia is old enough to model at all (more on this in another slide), and also if it’s exploitative.
Coconut bras for everyone
People freaked out about this picture of Sophia in a coconut bra and grass skirt. Is it sexualizing? Is it cute? Is it innocent?
High heels
The debate as to whether or not Abraham is trying to create a mini-me raged on when Sophia wore heels to take this birthday picture. Are they too high? Should 6-year-olds be allowed to wear high heels? Is Abraham a monster?
Stuffing?
Abraham is not always awesome, but the hubbub surrounding this photo of Sophia looking very pretty and age-appropriate in her yellow dress generated the question of whether or not Abraham had allowed Sophia to do something to accentuate her chest. It seems pretty obvious that it’s the cut of the dress and the fabric, but people often see what they want to see.
Too short?
The debate around this rather lovely photo of Sophia and Abraham at a fashion show centered on whether or not Sophia’s skirt is too short. Is it? Is it just that she’s sitting down? Or is this a ridiculous conversation? (Yes.)
Modeling
Apparently, Sophia wants to be a model. Abraham is connected enough to hook Sophia up with modeling jobs or something like this, and the fact that Sophia’s in front of a camera sparked much shouting on Instagram about whether or not she’s too young and if Abraham is exploiting her for the benefit of her own career.
The tooth fairy incident
Remember that time Sophia lost a tooth and Abraham — I mean, the tooth fairy — gave her some sweet cash for it? The conversation around this one was largely about how the amount of money was totally insane (it was).
Girls’ night
This photo of Sophia and Abraham in face masks spurned a larger conversation about Abraham’s waxing of Sophia’s eyebrows, as well as letting her wear makeup, and a number of other things that might make her daughter seem like she’s 7 going on 17.
Hair
Abraham’s Instagram followers are largely cruel to Sophia, and in this photo, they latched on hard to Sophia’s hair. Has her mother ever brushed it? Is it that hard to get a 7-year-old to let someone brush their hair? Is Abraham a horrible and neglectful parent who won’t rest until Sophia is a miserable, excessively made-up husk? The answer is yes, according to the internet.
