When you’re looking for a place to stay for your next getaway, you’d probably never guess that you might be flipping through some photos of a celebrity’s current or former home. They might not be as obvious as a sprawling mansion, but Airbnb and other rental sites do have celebrity crash pads on the market. If you’re interested in living like Leonardo DiCaprio or Sting, then perhaps a Palm Springs, California or Florence, Italy vacation is in your future? They are expensive places to stay, but boy, are they worth it!
In other cases, there are former celebrity homes that have been purchased by other people, but they still carry that star wattage — from the days of Sonny & Cher to historical times with the very first President of the United States, George Washington. In some cases, the properties have been made into museums and landmarks. Some have pools, one has its own private dance studio and many feature unique head-turning architecture. From Golden Age of Hollywood stars to pop sensations, there are plenty of cool places to rent. If you’re more into literary icons, Airbnb has the homes of several legendary writers. Maybe you can find some inspiration when you’re staying at their historic homes. Some of these homes are located in California, but there are a few in far-flung destinations, like Queen County, Virginia, and Montgomery, Alabama.
Whichever one you pick; you can feel like you’re one of the rich and famous while you’re relaxing on your vacation.

Nestled into the idyllic Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles, the sweeping property of famed escape artist and magician Harry Houdini must be seen to be believed. There main home overlooks romantic gardens, hiking trails, and waterfalls — it’s an ideal spot to celebrate Valentine’s Day or propose to your loved one. You may recognize the grounds once you are there because it’s also a popular filming location.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Palm Springs Estate
We love a home with a Hollywood pedigree and this property definitely delivers. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Palm Springs estate, built by mid-century modern architect Donald Wexler, was originally built for actress and singer Dinah Shore. With walls of glass showcasing the gorgeous 1.3 acres of land, the 7,022 square-foot estate includes a swimming pool, tennis court, spa, and several outdoor fireplaces to sip a cocktail by on cooler evenings. The Titanic star keeps his listing off Airbnb, but he does make it available to rent on his private website, 432Hermosa.com, starting at $3,750 per night.
Sting’s Italian Villa
Il Palagio is the perfect place to have an Eat, Pray, Love moment in the heart of Florence, Italy. Owned by Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, the 16th-century villa offers scenic landscape, 900-acres with olive trees, and the magic of the European region. The property is well-equipped with a recording studio, a playground, a tennis court, and concierge services. This is the couple’s summer retreat, but it is available for rent the rest of the year. To inquire about rates, visit the Il Palagio website.
George Washington’s Favorite Home Away from Home
George Washington might not be the celebrity home you were thinking of, but for a more rustic (and historic) experience, try Travelers Rest. It’s 23-acre farm in King and Queen County, Virginia where our first President of the United States would stop and rest when traveling between his homes in Mount Vernon and Williamsburg. Built in 1760, the guest home has been renovated, and offers plenty of activities from horseback riding to a floral design class.
