Everlasting might not be exactly like The Bachelor, but this fake reality show is pretty close. Here’s how Lifetime’s UnREAL pokes fun at our favorite reality TV obsession.
The overly dramatic ceremonies
UnREAL‘s “bracelet ceremony” is a direct nod to The Bachelor‘s always tense rose ceremony, complete with tears and hysterical exit interviews.
So. Many. Hot tubs.
Hot tubs are prime spots for super steamy moments, so it’s no surprise that UnREAL‘s Everlasting borrowed from The Bachelor and included these germ-filled tubs to amp up the romance potential.
Bizarre dates
Dinner and a movie? So not a thing on The Bachelor. Lavish, expensive or just totally-out-there dates are the name of the game on UnREAL‘s reality show as well. Anna and Adam’s meditation date would be seriously awk IRL.
It’s all in the editing
On UnREAL, savvy producers can make it look like Everlasting contestants are obsessed with the bachelor, totally insane or just straight-up awful, all thanks to clever editing. According to this article about the behind-the-scenes of The Bachelor, that’s not too far off from the real reality show’s tactics.
There’s always a villain
People always have a contestant that they hope will win the heart of the Bachelor, and the contestant that they love to hate. Bachelor villains are totally a thing (remember drama queen Tierra from Sean Lowe’s season?!), and UnREAL‘s Britney was the perfect personification of all the ladies who stirred up trouble.
All the tears
Has there been an episode of The Bachelor that didn’t leave a lady in tears? On UnREAL, it was basically the producer’s job to make the women cry over their suitor, and though we hope that the producers of The Bachelor aren’t quite so diabolical, there were certainly plenty of waterworks.
The fights
The Bachelor is famous for its girl-on-girl rivalries, which definitely makes for compelling drama. On UnREAL, the fights aren’t necessarily staged, but are definitely encouraged by producers who want to get some good shots for the week’s episode. Why? Because the producers get cash bonuses for any extra dramatics.
The gorgeous surroundings
The Bachelor mansions are always crazy gorgeous, and UnREAL‘s isn’t too shabby itself. The series definitely makes being on a reality show seem like absolute hell, but who wouldn’t want to kick it by that pool for a few weeks?!
The awkward intros
UnREAL totally nailed the bizarre ways the ladies introduce themselves to the new suitor on The Bachelor. One contestant on UnREAL‘s fake reality show whips out a violin before saying a single word to the new suitor. Another shows off her daughter’s stuffed animal. Ridiculous? Yes, but also just as ridiculous as The Bachelor.
The host
UnREAL‘s fake reality show host, Graham, is a dead ringer for Chris Harrison — right down to his pattern of speech.
