I love Gilmore Girls more than the average human. That doesn’t mean that I am not willing to recognize some outdated jokes when I hear them. Here are some of the most cringe-worthy/slightly offensive jokes from the original run of the show.
Lorelai travels back to the dark ages
Oy vey. I can’t even deal with this one. The fact that this was likely passed through multiple stages of editing makes me shake my head for weeks. To make a joke that two people of the same sex kissing would “look funny” is so beyond outdated, it’s unreal.
Seriously, Luke?
I can’t even deal with how ridiculous this sounds now. I know, as a society, we have just recently realized how insensitive and completely out of touch with reality this kind of sentiment is but… come on, Luke.
I’m sorry, what?
1. “Retarded” must mean AWESOME because Tigers are badass to the extreme.
2. WHEN WAS THIS OKAY?!
Jackson, I expect more from you
The context of this quote doesn’t help it from the depths of stupid, but it’s basically a response to Sookie asking Jackson, “How could you like ruffles?” Because men should like various types of wood and women should like ruffles. It’s science, right? Right.
Rory jumps into the “mean girl” pool
Rory really took a turn for the worse toward the end of the series. The entitled mean girl vibe came out in full force at times, which wasn’t her best look. It was super apparent during this particular scene where Lorelai reads a review Rory wrote about a ballet, in which she fat-shamed the lead ballerina in ways previously unknown to even the meanest of humans. She compared her to a “hippo” and even commented on the rolls visible in her leotard. Public humiliation is not awesome, friends.
It’s clearly Sookie’s fault
This line was uttered after a man asked Sookie on a date while she was married to Jackson. Of course, Sookie is a whore for allowing this to happen! Women and our sorcery! Poor unsuspecting men become entangled in our webs of seduction.
No words.
I honestly don’t even know what to say about this abomination of the human vernacular. Like most of the entries on this list, I don’t think there is ever a time period where this should have been acceptable. Unfortunately, women using their bodies to feed their children (LIKE MAGIC) is still considered weird and unaccetable. Luke, please know that my eyes are rolling so far back into my skull that they may shoot right through the back of my head.
Rory Gilmore, no!
This line was shocking even upon original viewing of this episode. The line doesn’t even fit with Rory’s character at the time. It simply never should have made it to the final cut. Gross.
Mrs.Kim
Look, I love me some Mrs. Kim. I just have to wonder if they could have possibly turned down the “Stereotypical Korean” dial a notch when they brought her character to life? The accent, the strict religious craziness and the complete lack of emotion can sometimes come off a little trite.
Whores everywhere!
Just wear the dress, Lorelai. Just. Wear. The. Dress.
