Tom Hiddleston might be Taylor Swift’s newest beau, but he’s also a highly in-demand, BAFTA-nominated British actor. In other words, he’s so much more than just Taylor Swift’s next musical inspiration.
He can actually sing
If you were surprised when Tom Hiddleston took on the role of Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, then you don’t know Hiddleston. Hiddleston loves to sing, and does so quite frequently. One quick online search will send you to magical videos of Hiddleston singing his heart out. Whether he’s jamming out to some Hank Williams or singing his favorite Disney tune — “The Bear Necessities” — Hiddleston is always up for a tune. Who knows — maybe now he’ll start singing some Taylor Swift?
He’s a big brother
Hiddleston has two younger sisters, one of which, Emma, is an actress. Emma Hiddleston recently had a role in BBC’s acclaimed miniseries, Wolf Hall. And while the industry can be brutal, Hiddleston makes sure she always has her brother on her side. “I’m quite protective of her. I worry that sometimes the business doesn’t see her intelligence and wisdom,” he said in an interview with Metro in 2011.
He went to school with Prince William
If you ever doubted whether Hiddleston was really British, know that he actually went to school with Prince William. (In other words, yeah, he’s definitely a Brit IRL.) Both Hiddleston and Prince William attended Eton, a college in England, at the same time. (Eddie Redmayne was also a student there.) Hiddleston went on to study at Cambridge before becoming a full-fledged movie star. As for his time rubbing elbows with the prince, Hiddleston has said that all the students treated Prince William as if he were any other student. “There was a general and very quietly stated ethos when he arrived that there was to be no special treatment and no special favours,” Hiddleston told the Daily Mail.
His favorite movie is ‘The Jungle Book’
Hiddleston is a huge Disney fan, and he’s a sucker for the classic animated film, The Jungle Book, which he said is the film that has inspired him the most in a BAFTA Guru interview in 2013. “It’s perfect,” Hiddleston said. “I love that film. When people come into my life and they haven’t seen it, I have to sit down and watch it with them.”
He’s afraid of sharks
Hiddleston loves Steven Spielberg movies, so his fear of sharks shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody who has seen Jaws. In his 2011 interview with Metro, Hiddleston admitted that he considers sharks to be “the ultimate killing machine,” adding, “I love swimming in the sea and don’t think about sharks until I’m the furthest person out from the shoreline and then the John Williams’ Jaws theme starts in my head.”
He felt the Bern
Back in March of 2016, Hiddleston appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on the same night as Senator Bernie Sanders. Turns out, Hiddleston was a fan of the Democratic presidential candidate, and got a backstage shot with Sanders. Hiddleston later posted the photo to his official Twitter account with the caption, “Look who I ran into backstage @jimmykimmel. #FeelTheBern.”
He’s multilingual
As if that sexy English accent weren’t enough, Hiddleston can speak multiple European languages, including French, Spanish and Italian. He even gives interviews in foreign languages while on international press tours or when he’s speaking to members of the international press.
Tom Hiddleston was at Benedict Cumberbatch’s wedding
When rumors that Benedict Cumberbatch had married Sophie Hunter began to spread, reports soon emerged saying that Hiddleston was not only in attendance, but acted as the best man! Unfortunately, that rumor was quickly debunked. What we know for sure is that yes, there was a wedding between Cumberbatch and Hunter, and, yes, Hiddleston was in attendance. It was, in other words, the most important British wedding since the royal wedding.
He’s a feminist
In 2014, Hiddleston participated in Elle magazine’s #ElleFeminism campaign, posing for photos wearing a “This is what a feminist looks like” T-shirt. “I believe in the strength and intelligence and sensitivity of women. My mother, my sisters, [they] are strong. My mum is a strong woman and I love her for it,” Hiddleston told the magazine.
He’s a total fangirl
Hiddleston isn’t afraid to show his love for other actors or projects. In 2012, he tweeted about his love for Jason Segel’s The Muppets reboot movie, calling it “one of the Great Films of the Decade.” A few months later, he tweeted that he finally met Segel and had the chance to do his fangirling in person. “Just ran into Jason Segel. Just told him how much I loved The Muppets. #WIN,” he wrote. Hiddleston himself got to join the sequel, Muppets Most Wanted, in 2014.
He’s a master of impressions
Hiddleston is a man of many talents. Not only is he an excellent actor, singer and all around sweetheart, he’s also fantastic at celebrity impressions. How good are his impressions, you ask? So good that he actually did Robert De Niro while sitting on a couch with Robert De Niro.
