Tinashe is so much more than Calvin Harris’s rumored new girlfriend. She’s had quite the remarkable career of her own.
For starters, before she collaborated with Calvin Harris on “Dollar Signs,” she made her national television debut in 2014, when she performed her single “2 On” at the BET Awards. Since then, she’s been compared to Janet Jackson, The Weeknd and Aliyah.
She’s been working since age 3
Tinashe (Tinashe Jorgenson Kachingwe) began her career at the age of 3, when she started modeling and acting. At age 4, she began studying ballet, jazz and tap.
She was in a girl group
In 2007, Tinashe joined the girl group The Stunners, who worked together from 2007 to 2011 before they released their first full album, but after they were featured as an opening act on Justin Bieber’s My World Tour.
She’s self-taught
After the breakup of The Stunners, Tinashe taught herself how to record and mix music, using tools like Final Cut Pro to edit her own music videos.
She was bullied as a kid
“I actually did get bullied a lot in school,” Tinashe told Bullett magazine in 2014. “I went to public school until 9th grade and had a pretty bad experience. I missed out on prom and graduation and the whole college experience, but I don’t feel bad about it because everything else I was doing was what I actually wanted,” she revealed.
She recorded an album in her bedroom
Amethyst, Tinashe’s seven-song mixtape released in 2015, was recorded in her bedroom over her Christmas vacation.
She’s an actress
Tinashe’s filmography includes roles in Akeelah and the Bee, Two and a Half Men, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Polar Express.
She lives at home with her family
According to a 2016 article about Tinashe in Complex magazine, she lives with her family, college professors Michael and Aimie Kachingwe and younger brothers Thulani and Kudzai, in a suburb north of Los Angeles.
She posed for ‘Playboy’
Tinashe was photographed clothed for Playboy‘s November 2015 issue. (The magazine stopped featuring full frontal nudity in March 2016.)
She’s written songs for other artists
In addition to her own hit-making, Tinashe wrote three songs for Fifth Harmony’s second studio album, 7/27, released in 2016.
She’s a martial artist
Between touring, acting, dancing, modeling and being an all-around superstar, Tinashe somehow also found the time to become a black belt in taekwondo.
