Taylor Swift is the Pop star of the moment, with multiple Grammys under her belt and a squad of gorgeous besties at her side. However, as great as 2016 has been for T-Swift, rumors, harsh tweets and one very bad breakup has definitely dampened the year for the “Blank Space” singer. While we’re sure that Swift will have a chance to rise again — perhaps with a fierce single?! — here’s the bad buzz Swift’s contended with this year.
The end of Talvin
After a seemingly blissful (and well-Instagrammed) romance, Swift and her DJ boyfriend, Calvin Harris, decided to call it quits in June of 2016. Though Harris initially took to Twitter to say that there is still plenty of “love and respect” between the former couple, that tune changes after Swift seemingly moves on from the relationship too quickly. He deletes his heartfelt, pro-Swift tweet, and the pair removes all of their Instagram photos of one another. (Fortunately, fans save them for posterity.)
Apple Music drama
The 1989 mogul pulled her music from streaming service Spotify in 2014, stating that she didn’t agree with their business model for paying artists. Many people supported that decision, which ultimately stood up for less-established artists. However, some fans couldn’t help but scoff when Swift initially put the music video for her single “New Romantics” exclusively on Apple Music — which charges a subscription service per month — making it impossible for non-subscribers to access it. Ironically, that’s the song in which Swift sings, “The best things in life are free” — just not the “New Romantics” video. (It has since been added to Swift’s VEVO, which does not charge a fee.)
Demi Lovato’s doesn’t like Swift’s gift
After Swift donates $250,000 to Kesha following her trial against Dr. Luke, in which the singer alleges that the music producer sexually assaulted her, Demi Lovato seemingly criticizes Swift for using her money, rather than her words, to stand up for Kesha in an Instagram comment. Later, in an interview with Refinery29, Lovato seemingly alleges that Swift, and stars like her, aren’t true feminists.
The Hiddleswift saga
Mere weeks after her breakup with Harris, Swift and Thor actor Tom Hiddleston are seen kissing in Rhode Island. That turns out to be just the beginning of their romantic world tour. Shortly after the pictures hit the web, Harris deletes any positive vibes he was sending Swift on Twitter, and then tweets (and deletes) the sentence “It’s about to go down.”
Songwriter beef
After Swift’s team reveals that the singer actually wrote ex-beau Harris’ track “This Is What You Came For” under a fake name, Harris goes on a Twitter rampage, insisting that Swift’s team is trying to knock him down and that it was she who wanted to keep her role in the song a secret. Harris even brings up the drama between Swift and Katy Perry, whom Swift allegedly (though not-so-secretly) penned her track “Bad Blood.” Even Perry herself gets in on the action, seemingly subtweeting Swift by retweeting a message about karma.
I heart T.S.?!
After Hiddleston wears an “I Heart T.S.” shirt to Swift’s star-studded Fourth of July party, rumors swirl that their new romance is totally bogus — or, possibly, fodder for a music video. The world collectively rolls their eyes.
‘Famous’ drama
After Kanye West releases the single “Famous” featuring a controversial line about being the one who made Swift famous after crashing her VMAs acceptance speech, Swift claps back at the rapper in her Grammy speech, telling her fans not to let anyone take credit for their fame or success. However, West’s wife Kim Kardashian announces in GQ that Swift actually approved the song lyric in a phone call with West — which she has video evidence of. Shortly after the interview is released, Kardashian posts the Snapchat video of that very phone call. The phone call, and the fact that Swift may have been lying about knowing about the “Famous” lyric, rocks the internet and leads social media to start calling Swift a liar. Swift then takes to Instagram to post the above response, in which she states that she took offense with West calling her a “bitch” in the song. Unfortunately, not every fan buys it.
The return of Becky
Welp, this is awkward. After the “Famous” feud, Kardashian and West fans secretly updated Swift’s Wikipedia page and changed her name to Taylor “Slithering Snake Becky With The Good Lies” Alison Swift. The internet officially has no chill.
