The end of Mad Men is upon us, so what better time to look back and take a closer look at Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the misogynist we love to hate.
Hand sanitizer?
While out at a business dinner, with Betty in the next room, Don uses sex (and his bare hand!) to manipulate client Bobbie Barrett (Melinda McGraw), because he doesn’t think she has the business acumen of a man and will easily fall for his machismo. Also, if she were a man, he certainly wouldn’t be feeling her up!
Don calls Betty a what?
After Betty leaves Don, he finds out she’s dating Henry Francis (Christopher Stanley). Infuriated, Don calls Betty a whore, but we all know who the real whore is, don’t we?
Betty, 2.0
Immediately after getting divorced from Betty, Don begins to chase a younger, less challenging version of his ex-wife, as if he could replace Betty with a cheap knockoff. Don is totally objectifying the females in his life, as if he can just buy another toy doll at the store… one that’s younger and less clever.
Don visits Megan on set
Don shows up on set where Megan (Jessica Paré), is shooting a love scene for the soap opera. With disdain, Don says to her, “You kiss people for money. You know who does that?” Eeek, what kind of slimeball says that to his wife?
Rolling pin
Don comes home drunk after being MIA for the entire day and Megan berates him, until Don belittles his wife by saying, “You want to get the rolling pin?”
“You want it”
In one of the stranger fights between Don and Megan, she strips down to her lingerie to “clean” the apartment in hopes of taunting him. But in a classic Don move, he turns the tables on her, saying, “You want it, you know you do,” is if he’s just a pawn in her wicked sexual game.
Don throws $$ at Peggy
Peggy gets angry at Don when he wants to give Ginsberg her golden idea about setting an ad in France. Don explodes, saying, “You want to go to Paris? Here, go to Paris,” then throws a wad of cash in Peggy’s face. Ouch.
50 Shades of Don
Don has Sylvia (Linda Cardellini), wait in a hotel room for him, telling her, “You exist in this room for my pleasure,” as if he were Christian Grey. Soon, Sylvia has enough and calls the weird tryst quits.
The choker
Things get really Freudian for Don when his attraction to Andrea Rhodes (Mädchen Amick), grows so intense, he kills her in his dream. He’s so threatened by the power of this woman that he has to murder her because his unconscious can’t find a way for him to coexist with this strong woman.
Pay to play
Already divorced from Betty, Don drinks too much and gets it on with his secretary, Allison (Alexa Alemanni). It would have been fine if Don didn’t give her $100 and an apology. Jeeze.
Don’s glass ceiling
When Megan excitedly tells Don she may have to go to Boston for three months to perform in a play, he tells her, “Absolutely not!” It seems Don feels awfully threatened by Megan’s success.
Sally’s teacher
The next few slides aren’t as overtly sexist, but clearly show that Don believes women are inferior to men, giving him providence over them. There’s nothing more disrespectful to Don’s daughter, not to mention his wife, than to sleep with Sally’s (Kiernan Shipka), schoolteacher, Suzanne Farrell (Abigail Spencer). Can you say, “inappropriate”?
Divorce lawyer
Betty (January Jones), tells Don she’s been to a divorce lawyer. As if he’s talking to a child, Don says, “Come on, Betts. What are you doing seeing a lawyer?” Guess what? She can see whomever she damn well wants! You don’t control her!
Don’s personal hell
After a very bad fight, things get physical between Don and Megan. He chases her around the apartment and forces her to the ground, as if he’s trying to drag her down into his own personal hell. He refuses to let Megan separate her ego from his.
Boner in the sky
Every businessman in the 1960s was infatuated with a lovely young air hostess, including Don, who just couldn’t help himself when he met Shelly (Sunny Mabrey). After a sexy layover, Shelly admits she’s engaged to be married, but Don tells her, “I’ve been married a long time, you get plenty of chances.” Because that’s what marriage is, right Don? A series of chances to cheat? Mad Men, season 7B starts on Sunday, April 5, on AMC.
