Sure, they were in a Nicholas Sparks film, but are Cyrus and Hemsworth actually living a Nicholas Sparks plot?
Their ‘A Walk to Remember’ phase
In the earliest stages of their relationship, Cyrus and Hemsworth were googly eyed, innocent teenagers who couldn't get enough of each other, not unlike Landon and Jamie in A Walk to Remember.
Cyrus and Hemsworth also didn't care what the media said about them at this point, kinda like how Landon and Jamie didn't let their peer groups tarnish their love.
Thank goodness they skipped over the point in the tragic plot where Jamie died extremely young after suffering terribly.
Nights in Costa Rica
After a whirlwind on-again-off-again-on-again romance, Cyrus and Hemsworth found themselves happily engaged in 2013 and took a little vacay to Costa Rica. There they bonded on the beach, holding each other and finding inspiration, just like Paul and Adrienne in Nights in Rodanthe. Plus, Nights in Rodanthe's tagline is "It's never too late for a second chance." How perfect is that for Cyrus and Hemsworth?
He made a vow
As long-haired, clean-cut Cyrus began to transition to her edgier, shaved-head, non-Disney persona, Hemsworth seemed to embrace the change and roll with the punches, à la Leo in The Vow, when Paige was basically a whole different person after her accident. Couldn't have been easy.
Can’t be tamed
But was Cyrus' new image too much for Hemsworth to take? She said herself that she can't be tamed, just like Luke the bull rider in The Longest Ride. Hemsworth was like Sophia, torn between his love and Cyrus' erratic behavior.
Billy Ray’s ‘The Notebook’ moment
In April 2013, Cyrus' dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, took a page out of Allie's dad's book from The Notebook when he basically dismissed his daughter's relationship as puppy love and that he didn't know if she would really marry Hemsworth. "They're young, they're kids," the elder Cyrus told Nightline. "The great news is they're great friends."
Sounds like when Allie's father tells her frantic mother that they should just let Allie and Noah's romance play out because they are young and it won't last, doesn't it?
Dear Liam
Not long after Cyrus' VMA twerking extravaganza in August 2013, the couple announced that their engagement was officially off. Then in September 2013, Cyrus released the hearbreaking video for "Wrecking Ball," which obviously is about Hemsworth. Doesn't Cyrus' tears as she rehashes her love for Hemsworth in the video remind you of John's sadness in Dear John as he pours over the letter from Savannah telling him she is engaged to someone else? The distance, the despair, the longing, the regret. Sigh.
The other man
In November 2014, Cyrus got serious with Patrick Schwarzenegger, and you can't help but compare them to Allie's relationship with Lon Hammond in The Notebook: You like Allie and Lon together. He's sweet, gorgeous, has money and treats her right. But he just isn't Noah.
Same goes for Schwarzenegger. But he's just not Hemsworth.
Do it for the animals
In The Choice, Travis and Gabby are brought together over their love of animals, specifically Gabby's dog, Molly. In November 2015, Cyrus and Hemsworth mirrored Travis and Gabby, when they bonded (once again) over Hemsworth's adoption of his pup, Dora the Explorer. Hemsworth and Cyrus' love of animals is an ongoing theme in their lives and relationship.
Never over
Here we are in summer 2016, and Hemsworth and Cyrus are once again together, happy and Instagram official. Because it wasn't over. And it still isn't over.
