Celebrities break up all the time — but that doesn’t mean they get to skip out on every award show where their ex may be present. That’s definitely true for the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, which could cause some awkward encounters between former lovers. Here’s what exes might be in the same place at the same time at the VMAs this year.
Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez
Though Selena Gomez’s videos were snubbed at the VMAs this year (seriously, why no love for “Hands To Myself”?) her track “Kill ‘Em With Kindness” got a nod for Song Of The Summer. Her on-again, off-again ex (with whom she just got into an Instagram feud) was nominated this year for Best Pop Video for “Sorry” and Breakthrough Longform Video for Purpose: The Movement.
Rihanna & Chris Brown
Adding to a long tradition of the music industry continuing to celebrate Chris Brown despite his allegedly troubled personal history, Brown was nominated for Breakthrough Longform Video for Royalty. His ex RiRi received a nod for Best Female Video for “Work.”
Taylor Swift & Calvin Harris
Though she dominated the 2015 VMAs, Swift was snubbed for videos “Out Of The Woods” and “Wildest Dreams” this year. A source for Us Weekly reports that Swift won’t be attending the show, but given that Swift is one to make a splash, there’s always the chance that she’ll end up attending anyway. If she does, she will likely run in to her ex-boyfriend and Best Electronic Video nominee Calvin Harris for “This Is What You Came For.”
Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake
Once upon a time, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were the ultimate pop couple. That was forever ago, of course, but it’s worth noting that these two exes will likely run into one another at the VMAs. Spears is a performer this year and Timberlake was nominated in the Song Of The Summer category for “Can’t Stop This Feeling!”
Joe Jonas & Demi Lovato
There doesn’t seem to be much bad blood between these two — after all, Lovato and Jonas Brother Nick teamed up for a concert tour — but should they both accept their invites to the VMAs this year, they’ll spot their ex in the audience. DNCE, Jonas’ band, was nominated for Best New Artist, while Lovato was featured on Fall Out Boy’s “Irresistible,” which is a Best Rock Video nominee.
Calvin Harris & Rita Ora
It’s not just Swift who Harris may be on the watch for at the VMAs, should he officially attend. His ex Rita Ora will be one of the hosts of the VMAs pre-show and also a commentator throughout the event, reports Us Weekly.
Nick Jonas & Selena Gomez
Not long after his breakup with Miley Cyrus, Jonas dated Selena Gomez. Though Jonas wasn’t nominated for a VMA this year (and complained about his VMAs snub on Twitter) he could still score an invite given his brother’s nod, which means he may run into Gomez.
Drake & Rihanna
Are Rihanna and Drake together? Just friends? Broken up? It’s so hard to keep up with these frequent collaborators, but either way, they both have a reason to be at the VMAs. Rihanna is performing with Ariana Grande, while Drake received a nod for Video Of The Year, Best Male Video, and Best Hip-Hop Video for “Hotline Bling.” Of course, they could also win an award together — Rihanna’s video “Work,” which Drake is featured on, scored a nod for Best Collaboration Video. We’re sure these maybe-exes will be fine.
