Sure, we know emo bands are coming back, but several actually have new albums out this year. I’m serious.
Hello, from emo me
But first, let me establish my emo cred.
Hi, my name is Kristine, and this is what I looked like in 2004. Yes, this was my first Myspace pic. I was really cool and wore a lot of black eyeliner. I copied the Matchbook Romance CD Stories and Alibis onto a tape (yes, an actual, physical tape) because my first car only had a radio and tape player. It’s literally all I listened to in my car. I’m not even joking. I was also obsessed with Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, At the Drive-In, Thrice, The Mars Volta, Funeral for a Friend and so many other emo and screamo bands.
I guess not much has changed. I still frequently listen to my emo playlist on Spotify, and my eyeliner is always black and smudges all over my face, and I constantly have to correct it when I look at my face in the bathroom.
OK, now that introductions are out of the way, let’s talk about how FOR FREAKING FINALLY, EMO IS BACK AND I FEEL LIKE I’M IN THE YEAR 2004 AGAIN. The greatest year of them all.
Thrice
Thrice disappeared after releasing Anthology in 2012, but back in May of this year, they released To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere. And in case you were wondering, yes, it’s worth the listen. (Not as good as The Artist in the Ambulance or Vheissu, but that’s a given.)
Panic! at the Disco
This is a weird one. They’ve technically released music pretty steadily since their first album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, in 2005, but does anyone really remember them after their second full-length album Pretty Odd? Didn’t think so. Turns out original band members slowly trickled for varying reasons (from creative differences to health- and drug-related issues) and ultimately left one original member: lead singer Brendon Urie. Clearly it hasn’t affected success of one of their new singles, “Hallelujah,” as it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 40 — and they’re currently co-headlining with Weezer. Not bad, Urie!
Good Charlotte
OK, OK, you’re probably still not comfortable admitting you were a Good Charlotte fan. But I know y’all are out there. And I know you had friends who liked them too. Well, luckily for us Good Charlotte fans, they’re back after five years of silence. Unfortunately for us, the new single “Life Can’t Get Much Better” isn’t great, but take a listen for yourself.
Taking Back Sunday
This isn’t really a comeback. They’ve been releasing albums nearly every year since 2002, starting with Tell All Your Friends. But! They’re coming out with a new album on Sept. 16 called Tidal Wave. And the name of their first single of the album? “Tidal Wave.”
Blink-182
After all that Tom DeLonge drama, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker rebanded with a new guitarist, Matt Skiba. And they’ve quickly risen to the top; I’m sure you’ve heard their latest single “Bored To Death” all over the alt radio stations.
Saosin
“Seven Years” has got to be the best Saosin song they’ve ever released. So maybe that’s why they’re making a comeback now — seven years later. Check out their latest single “The Silver String” from their new album Along the Shadow. They haven’t changed one bit… in the best way possible.
Brand New
Daisy, their last album, was released in 2009, and when they began touring again last year, emo kids predictably went fucking bananas (including me). Since their touring, though, they’ve released only one new single, “I Am a Nightmare,” and an album of leaked demos. Where’s the new album, boys?
Simple Plan
Y’all, I don’t know if you knew this, but Simple Plan’s been on tour all year — and frontman Pierre Bouvier has been documenting the entire tour on his Instagram. The band released a new album this year, Taking One for the Team.
Jimmy Eat World
Real talk: I’ve missed Jimmy Eat World, and I frequently find myself listening to “23” on a loop. So this is probably the best news: They’re back with a new album this year — on Oct. 21 to be exact. In the meantime, listen to their single “Sure and Certain.”
Yellowcard
Yellowcard is obviously so much more than “Ocean Avenue,” but let’s not kid ourselves — it’s the one song we all know and love. They actually haven’t been out of the game for too long. Their last album, Lift a Sail, came out in 2014, and they’ve just released a new song in August, “The Hurt Is Gone.” You can expect their new album to drop Sept. 30.
Green Day
Similar story to Yellowcard, Green Day’s been around. Demolicious was released in 2014, and they’re back this year with a new album on Oct. 7.
Sum 41
After seeing Deryck Whibley struggle with alcohol abuse, all fans cared about was his recovery — and pretty much wrote off a Sum 41 comeback. But lo and behold, Whibley bounced back, and the band announced they’ll be returning with a new album on Oct. 7. Why is this such a big deal? Their last full-length album came out in 2007… 2007, people!
My Chemical Romance
Ah, last but not least, MCR. It suddenly felt like 2006 all over again when a mysterious video they posted went viral on Facebook, with everyone speculating a comeback on Sept. 23, 2016 — the date shown at the end of the video. However, the band quickly put rumors to bed, announcing that they aren’t reuniting or touring together; they’re simply re-releasing the album The Black Parade for its anniversary. Sorry, kids, and goodbye heavy eyeliner.
