Season 2 of How to Get Away with Murder had one surprise after another, and Season 3 promises to be filled with just as much secrets, suspense and, of course, murder. Here are a few spoilers and theories we already have about the upcoming season.
Things are weird with Wes and Annalise
In Season 2, Wes learned that Annalise knew his mother — and the identity of his father. Showrunner Pete Nowalk told TV: “I think he understands now why Annalise has been doing everything and treating him that way more than he did before. Whether he can trust her again and whether he wants her in his life is the big question… That’s a big dilemma for him, but I would like to see them not hate each other for a little bit.”
The Hapstall case is over… mostly
According to Nowalk’s interview with Variety, the Hapstall case is “95 percent” done — and, just in case you had any questions about who really killed the Hapstall parents, he confirms that Caleb did indeed kill his mom and dad for their cash. Though there has been some speculation amongst fans as to whether Caleb really did kill himself (or whether it was someone else who staged a suicide), according to Nowalk, Caleb “gave up.”
The format will be different
Season 1 of How to Get Away with Murder focused on a “case of the week” for a good chunk of the season before diving into the Lila storyline in the last few episodes. Season 2 was even more narrowed in on one case. Will Season 3 return to the first season’s format, or stick more closely to the sophomore season’s structure? According to Nowalk’s interview with TVLine, we should expect a shake-up: “We’ll probably try to do a balance. I love watching Annalise do her job in any way. She loves her job, and I don’t think she’s the same person if she’s not doing it. So, whether that’s case of the week or case of the season, seeing her at work is what I care about.”
Expect more romance
One of the most jaw-dropping moments of Season 2 was Asher and Michaela’s hookup. Will it continue into Season 3? According to Nowalk’s interview with Variety, that relationship will “definitely” be explored — Asher is into Michaela because she provides a “challenge” for him.
There will be more Oliver
Which means more Connor and Oliver — yay! According to TVLine, actor Conrad Ricamora has been promoted to a series regular for Season 3. Does that mean he’ll become an official member of the Keating Five (Keating Six?)? He’s definitely into the danger, but there’s a real chance Oliver’s thrill-seeking could put him at odds with the boyfriend who just wants to keep him safe.
Someone is out to get Annalise
Have Annalise’s crimes finally caught up to her? The promo for Season 3 of How to Get Away with Murder certainly makes it seem that way. Annalise’s face has been peppered around the university campus, with one very fitting title attached: “KILLER.” The real question here is, just which murder is this person accusing Annalise of?
Asher got away with murder
When asked if Emily Sinclair’s death was being investigated further, Nowalk told Entertainment Weekly that Annalise had fixed that situation. According to Nowalk: “There’s always going to be risks of things coming back to haunt them, but for me, I think that’s case closed.” However, that doesn’t mean the case is closed forever. Nowalk joked, “But I can take [closing the case] back. You won’t hold it against me if I take it back.”
A huge mystery will be revealed
According to Viola Davis’ interview with E! News, Season 3 starts off with a crazy mystery that is “so big” and “so unbelievable” that it will cost each of the characters something. As for whether or not there will be a new murder, Davis hints that she “can’t actually say that.” Hmm…
There will be a major Frank decision
According to the official press release for the Season 3 premiere episode “We’re Good People Now,” Annalise will wrestle with a decision about Frank that could “change everything.” Could it be about whether or not to get revenge on Frank for his involvement in the death of Annalise’s child? Or could it be finally getting justice for Lila, the college student Frank killed at Sam’s bidding?
There will be new law students
According to the press release for the Season 3 premiere, Annalise will open up a new criminal law clinic, where her law students will compete to try pro bono cases. That means it won’t just be the Keating Five anymore: Annalise will have to deal with a whole new group of students. Of course, the real question here is, will they wind up murderers too?
Mary J. Blige will guest star
Well, this casting news is major. The “Family Affair” singer will appear on the third season of How to Get Away with Murder in a still-mysterious role, reports Entertainment Weekly.
We could return to Asher’s storyline
In Season 2, Asher is convinced that his father was murdered and didn’t actually kill himself after the judge’s cover-up was exposed. According to Nowalk’s interview with Entertainment Weekly, we may get some more information on Asher’s dad moving forward. The showrunner told EW: “Yes, it’s possible that we come back to that. At this point, Asher really wanted to believe that his father was killed, because then killing Emily Sinclair was more justified. He’s now in a place where he’s trying to move on from that and accept the reality that he committed suicide.”
One of the Keating Five may die
The promo for Season 3 has a very dark tagline: “Brace yourself for a mystery so killer, not everyone is going to make it out alive.” The most shocking aspect? That the tagline is read while the promo cuts to the faces of the Keating Five. Could one of our beloved law students really be a goner?
