The Lion King remake is a risky move, but if Disney can pull off what they did with The Jungle Book, it might be gold.
Fans are not on board
Despite the fact that The Jungle Book was gorgeous and arguably the best live-action remake yet, fans aren’t convinced director Jon Favreau can strike gold twice.
It’s too classic
Why fix something that isn’t broken? I would say that The Lion King is a classic of all classics, and touching that when people have certain nostalgia and expectations attached to a remake is a hugely is a risky move.
The voices are iconic
You can’t beat talents like Jonathan Taylor Thomas, James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg and Jeremy Irons. Unless the movie were to bring back some of the original voices, of course.
There aren’t any humans
Unlike The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella, which also got the live-action treatment, The Lion King is all animals, meaning the CGI technology will be held to an even higher standard, as the movie will depend completely on it.
The political climate has changed
The world looked a bit different back in 1994 when the animated Lion King was released. With news of the remake, political jokes were rampant on social media. They were definitely hilarious, but also a stark reality about the world we’re living in.
Diversity is key
The original animated film did such an amazing job of making sure that its voice actors were diverse, both in sound and in background. The new live-action film will also need to be cast accordingly.
The music is too good
Elton John. Elton freaking John! How do you compete with the music of Elton John? You just don’t. You. Just. Don’t. Even though Disney stated that the live-action version will feature original songs, it still won’t be the same.
There’s a lot riding on this film
With news of a live-action remake, our ’90s childhood nostalgia is calling, which means Disney had better not mess this one up.
It means we have to relive Mufasa’s death
I don’t think I can handle that scene again. It scarred my 5-year-old mind in the movie theater. Maybe that’s why they named him Scar? Just thinking about it gives me the chills.
It could honestly be great
The live-action Lion King has a lot of ways that it could go wrong, but it could also go very, very right. On a positive note, just think about how well the Broadway show has done. Did it change things? Of course! But the experience is still magical, and the story is still worth telling for a new generation. I know I’ll be giving this one a chance.
‘The Lion King’ remake of a remake
Don’t forget, the original animated version was already a remake. It was a take on Shakespeare’s story Hamlet, which means the new live-action version will just be a remake of a remake? Uh-huh.
