It’s been three years since Dexter ended with arguably the most awkward series finale in history. Remember, it was the one where — spoiler alert — Dexter’s girlfriend takes his son off to a foreign country, Deb dies, and Dexter becomes a lumberjack? Yup, it was weird. And unexpected. But it’s still got us thinking years later, so maybe the show won? Either way, looking back, here are the ways we would rewrite the ending.
Dexter could have been arrested
The most obvious ending could have been Dexter finally having to face his serial killer crimes.
Dexter could have been killed
After years of killing, the hunter could have become the hunted. It would have been poetic justice.
He could have died in that hurricane
Dexter could have realized that he’d never stop wanting to kill and taken his own life as his last serial killer stand.
Dexter could have been in jail
Maybe we could have flashed forward 10 years to Dexter sitting in jail, talking to Harrison.
Deb could have survived
Deb’s death just seemed rushed, and it didn’t do her story arc justice.
Deb could have gotten over her Deb-ness
OK, so Dexter becomes a lumberjack. Fine. But at least let Deb have her happily ever after.
Dexter’s secret could have been revealed
Miami PD could have finally gotten its act together and pieced together Dexter’s crimes.
Dexter could have kept his drive to kill
A serial killer suddenly losing his drive to kill just never made sense to me. The point was that it was part of him.
Dexter could have gone to Buenos Aires
Rather than just rolling over and falling into tortured depression, Dexter could have chosen to live his life.
Ghost Harry has the final word
Dexter escapes to Buenos Aires with Hannah and Harrison and continues killing with Harry’s wisdom in his ear.
Quinn could have acted like Quinn
Quinn was almost always suspicious of Dexter. Then he watches Dexter kill someone, and he’s just cool with it?
The show could have ended after Season 4
Season 4 was hands down the best in the series. Maybe the main issue here is that the show just went on too long.
Harrison could have become a killer
Just as Dexter was born in blood, Harrison also had a scary introduction. He could have carried on the family legacy.
Dexter could have done anything except be a lumberjack
Did he have to become a lumberjack? A lumberjack, of all things?
They could have gone with Clyde Phillips’ ending
Producer Clyde Phillips had a series finale in mind, and it’s my personal favorite.
