We finally have the nominees for the 2016 Critics Choice Awards — and boy, are there some real surprises.
Among the least surprising nominations are La La Land with 12 nods (including Ryan Gosling for Best Actor and Emma Stone for Best Actress) and Arrival with 10 nods (including Best Picture). Hacksaw Ridge made it in there as a nominee for Best Picture, and Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, also received 10 nominations.
The awards show doesn’t air until Dec. 11 at 8/7c, so until then, let’s take a look at the nominees that are total — but worthy — surprises.
Best Picture: ‘Hell or High Water’
Hell or High Water, as timely as it is, has kept a low profile compared to fellow nominees.
Best Actor: Andrew Garfield
He played an underdog in Hacksaw Ridge, so can Garfield secure the award as an underdog IRL?
Best Actress: Annette Bening
Bening won’t be seen in 20th Century Women until late December, so this is a true insider’s nomination.
Best Supporting Actor: Lucas Hedges
Hedges is a total newbie, so going up against vets like Jeff Bridges is very surprising.
Best Supporting Actress: Janelle Monaé
This is Monaé’s second-ever feature film role, so heck yes, this is a welcome surprise.
Best Young Actor/Actress: Hailee Steinfeld
Steinfeld is a great actress, no doubt about it. But she’s up against very fresh faces who deserve a spotlight, too.
Best Acting Ensemble: ‘Hidden Figures’
Hidden Figures boasts an excellent cast led by three stellar black actresses. I’m here for it.
Best Directing: David Mackenzie
This UK import is a definite surprise against a hefty lineup of award-winning directors.
Best Original Screenplay: ‘The Lobster’
The Lobster is no doubt a great film, but its early 2016 release makes it feel like a fresher film should be in its place.
Adapted Screenplay: ‘Nocturnal Animals’
Tom Ford’s adaptation credit is a surprise, considering he’s a fashion designer by trade. But he so deserves this one.
