The speeches ranged from wacky and inspirational to so emotional, they made even Beyoncé cry.
Chance the Rapper
Best New Artist
“I know people think independence means you do it by yourself, but independence means freedom.”
Best Rap Album
“I didn’t think that we were gonna get this one, so I don’t have cool stuff to say this time… This is for every indie artist who’s been doing this mix-tape stuff… It’s another one, baby!
Twenty One Pilots
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
“This story starts in Columbus, Ohio, and it was a few years ago… I called [Josh Dun] up and I said, ‘You want to come over to my rental house and watch the Grammys?’ As we were watching, we noticed every single one of us was in our underwear. So Josh turns to me and says, “If we ever win a Grammy, we should receive it just like this.” — Tyler Joseph
Maren Morris
Best Country Solo Performance
“Eleven years ago, I went to my first-ever Grammy camp, and it’s crazy to be here a decade later.”
Beyoncé
Best Urban Contemporary Album, Lemonade
“Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to beautifully capture the profundity of Deep Southern culture…
“We all experience pain and loss and often we become inaudible. My intention for the film and album was to create a body of work that would give a voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness and our history. To confront issues that make us uncomfortable. It’s important to me to show images to my children that reflect their beauty so they can grow up in a world where they look in the mirror — first to their own families as well as the news, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the White House and the Grammys — and see themselves. And have no doubt that they are beautiful, intelligent and capable. This is something I want for every child of every race, and I feel it’s vital that we learn from the past and recognize our tendencies to repeat our mistakes.”
Adele
Song of the Year, “Hello”
“First of all, I really do apologize for swearing. George Michael, I love him, and it means a lot to me, so I’m really sorry if I offended anyone.”
Record of the Year, “Hello”“The comeback was completely masterminded by [her manager, Jonathan Dickins]. I love you so much, like my dad. I don’t love my dad, that’s the thing. But I would love you like you were my dad! To Beyoncé, I adore you, and I want you to be my mummy.”
Adele, again
When Adele gave her emotional acceptance speech for Album of the Year, she and Beyoncé had a moment. There were tears everywhere.
Album of the Year, 25
“Five years ago, when I was last here, I was pregnant, and I didn’t know. And I was awarded that shortly after, I found out shortly after, which was the biggest blessing of my life. And in my pregnancy, becoming a mother, I lost a lot of myself. I struggled and I still do struggle being a mom. It’s really hard. But tonight, winning this is kind of full circle.
“But I can’t possibly accept this award. I’m very humbled and very grateful and gracious, but my life is Beyoncé, and the album to me, the Lemonade album was so monumental and so well thought out. And so beautiful and soul-bearing, and we all got to see another side of you that you don’t always let us see, and we appreciate that. And all us artists adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering, and you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have. And I always will.”
