Technological advances are never more apparent than when you watch old movies — and by old, we mean just a couple of decades. The plots of these flicks from the ’90s would be destroyed by simple things we totally take for granted today.
‘My Girl’ (1991)
Today a kid like Thomas wouldn’t even get out of bed without an EpiPen at the ready.
‘Psycho’ (1998)
The plot of this Vince Vaughn-Anne Heche-helmed shot-for-shot remake of the classic thriller would be instantly trashed by one website: Yelp. No one would stay at the hotel after a couple of 1-star reviews over the bloodstained shower curtains.
‘Never Been Kissed’ (1999)
Both Josie Grosey and her brother Rob would have been outed as frauds within days as soon as Aldys discovered their alter egos had no social media history.
‘There’s Something About Mary’ (1998)
Ted wouldn’t need to hire a PI to track down his high school crush — as a prominent doctor, she would be easily found online — so Pat never would have gotten involved.
‘Spice World’ (1997)
Our 24-hour, TMZ-driven celebrity news cycle makes the whole newspaper plotline completely obsolete.
‘Showgirls’ (1997)
There is literally not a single dark corner left in Vegas that isn’t captured by a security camera. Nomi would never get away with pushing Cristal down the stairs, especially since there was a huge financial settlement involved.
‘Empire Records’ (1995)
Record store? What? Try iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, Tidal…
‘Romeo + Juliet’ (1996)
Hello, Juliet could have just texted her plan to Romeo and saved everyone a lot of grief.
‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994)
We’d already know what was in Marsellus’s briefcase because someone would have snapped a selfie with it and posted it to Instagram #ItsNotHisSoul
‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ (1998)
Amanda could quickly and easily arrange a meet up with Preston via What’s App — no need to waste an entire night looking all over town for the guy.
‘The Blair Witch Project’ (1999)
There would be no found footage because what are tapes? Heather, Mike and Josh would have streamed the entire ordeal on Facebook Live. Also, GPS anyone?
‘Clerks’ (1994)
Randal can’t exactly work inside of a Redbox, now can he?
‘Home Alone’ (1990)
The entire fiasco started when Kevin’s dad accidentally threw away the poor kid’s paper airline ticket. That plot device wouldn’t work today since most airlines don’t distribute paper tickets anymore.
‘Home Alone 2’ (1992)
Kevin could never have gotten on the wrong plane because boarding passes are electronically scanned now. Also, Donald Trump would be too busy tweeting to stop to talk with Kevin.
