Mary Jane. Reefer. Weed. Ganja.
Marijuana is perhaps one of the most common, mainstream drugs in use today. It’s appreciated for its mellowing effects as well as the ways in which it can influence creativity, so it’s perhaps not too radical a statement to say that the relationship between marijuana and various celebrities is very strong. Whether they use it to disconnect from the hectic celebrity lifestyle or smoke to help get the creative juices flowing, there’s no doubt that marijuana and artistic endeavors go hand-in-hand. There are tons of celebrities who have made their love of this groovy, mind-altering drug known. Some have gone on to not only be prolific smokers but also grow their own strains of weed and sell it across the United States.
So, let’s take a look at some of the iconic celebs and some surprising ones who love their bud, shall we?
Rihanna
Rihanna is very public about her affection for weed. Whether speaking about it in interviews or posting her smoking habits on Instagram or Snapchat, the “Wild Thoughts” singer loves her herb, and there are no signs she’s stopping now. She’s had some particularly memorable weed moments as well, including that time she rolled a blunt on the head on her security guard at Coachella while she was sitting on his shoulders and when she dressed up like the Bride of Mary Jane for Halloween in 2012.
Snoop Dogg
It’s not inaccurate to say that Snoop and marijuana go together like peanut butter and jelly. His smoking habits and love of the drug have been known for a majority of his career, making him one of the foremost public proponents of smoking weed.
In 2016, Snoop celebrated the legalization of weed in California with a celebratory tweet and a fitting hashtag: #smokeweedeveryday.
Cheech & Chong
The original stoner bros of the celeb world have to be comedians Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. The pair broke out into the mainstream with ’70s buddy comedies like Up in Smoke and Still Smokin’ that pitched them as lovable potheads.
Chong, the particularly vocal one of the pair, celebrated the legalization of weed in California in 2016 with a photo of himself sitting next to a shelf of weed varietals. He also waxed poetic about his love of weed during a Reddit AMA, where he said that he loves to smile when he’s high and talked about how he has his own strain of weed, which he currently sells in dispensaries across the country.
Kid Cudi
Kid Cudi has documented his loving relationship with weed in his music. In fact, he’s is so well-know for his love of bud that he’s been nicknamed “The Lonely Stoner,” thanks to the pensive tone his music takes on when he raps about his weed-fueled thoughts.
Cameron Diaz
In 2011, Cameron Diaz revealed that she used to buy weed from Snoop Dogg when they were both teenagers. “We went to high school together. He was a year older than me… I remember him, he was very tall and skinny,” Diaz said. “I’m pretty sure I bought weed from him. I was green even in high school!”
Seth Rogen
Rogen is perhaps one of the most prominent tokers in Hollywood. Nearly every one of his films features heavy pot smoking in fun or goofy situations (see: This Is The End, Pineapple Express, Sausage Party). When MTV interviewed Rogen in 2011, he spoke about how he uses it to help him write.
“I smoke a lot of weed when I write, generally speaking,” he said. “I don’t know if it helps me write. It makes me not mind that I’m writing. And I don’t know if it makes me work better, but it makes me not care that I’m working. Who wants to work? But if you’re stoned, it doesn’t seem like work.”
Matthew McConaughey
The Oscar winner has had a longtime love affair with weed. One of the first notable reveals is that he was arrested in 1999 for resisting arrest after he was discovered with weed in his car. McConaughey has made other references to his weed smoking in the past, including during a recent interview with Stephen Colbert.
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg is a big believer in the medicinal properties of marijuana that she launched her own line of products that deploys that various effects of weed to ease the symptoms of menstrual cramps. “For me, I feel like if you don’t want to get high high, this is a product specifically just to get rid of discomfort,” she stated in a Vanity Fair interview in 2016. “Smoking a joint is fine, but most people can’t smoke a joint and go to work.” Goldberg’s efforts to use a natural drug in a revolutionary way have put her at the forefront of celebs putting their love of weed to good use.
Kirsten Dunst
Dunst went on the record with MTV in 2007 about her relationship with marijuana; at the time, she was very much a fan of the mellow drug. “I drink moderately, I’ve tried drugs. I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does,” she said, and went on to say that she’s used it moderately and possibly just to keep a creative buzz going. “I’ve never been a major smoker, but I think America’s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean — are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place.”
Justin Timberlake
Everyone’s favorite boy band member has been a vocal supporter of weed in his career. In 2011, he opened up to Us Weekly about why he smokes pot: “The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high.”
Willie Nelson
Nelson is one of the aging but strong proponents of marijuana use and legalization. Prolific in his use of weed, some might consider it a rite of passage to smoke with the country singer. During a GQ interview in 2015, Nelson got a chance to open up about his own entrepreneurial endeavors into marijuana growing and selling and opening up about how he has used pot to help keep him calm over the years.
Carlos Santana
Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana has openly pushed for the legalization of marijuana: “Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education. You will see a transformation in America,” he stated in 2009.
Miley Cyrus
Cyrus, once a very vocal and active user of weed, recently gave up smoking in favor of what she believes is a healthier lifestyle. In the past, she was not shy about sharing her smoking habits on Instagram and Snapchat and waxing poetic about the personal benefits of smoking weed.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga hasn’t kept her love of weed a secret — she praised marijuana during a concert once, calling it “wondrous” — but she has had to find a healthy balance. While she’s hinted about how marijuana plays into her creative process, she also readily admitted in 2013 that she may have gone overboard when she was smoking 15 joints a day to help recover from a surgery.
Frances McDormand
The Fargo actor has long been a lover of weed, with her most notable public commentary coming from when she appeared on the cover of High Times. “I’m a recreational pot smoker,” McDormand told the mag. “There has never been enough of a distinction between marijuana and other drugs. It’s a human rights issue, a censorship issue and a choice issue.”
Woody Harrelson
Harrelson is a longtime friend and lover of marijuana, even though he recently quit smoking it. He’s also an activist for the legalization of marijuana and hemp, which has helped to make him one of the friendliest allies of weed in Hollywood.
Gael Garcia Bernal
Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal has stated that he supports the legalization of marijuana and reportedly has enjoyed using the drug himself, according to HuffPost.
Ilana Glazer
From her comedy show The Time-Traveling Bong that she co-wrote, to the semi-fictional version of herself on Broad City to some very real-life displays of love for weed, there’s no doubt that Ilana Glazer is one of the most visible friends of the drug in 2017. However, Glazer has made it clear that while she loves weed, she doesn’t really want to smoke with everyone she meets; she likes to have some “me” time when she blazes.
Method Man
The rapper and actor has been a longtime fan of marijuana. While he’s appeared in films where his characters are weed enthusiasts (see: 2001’s How High), there are also anecdotes circulating about the lengths to which he has gone in order to attain a good high on Reddit and he even worked with Willie Nelson to produce some killer, stoner-inspired soundtracks for 4/20, the unofficial holiday for weed lovers.
