Netflix seems to be voicing its global consciousness this September with original shows that tell unlikely stories from all over the world. These films explore other cultures and experiences that may not be on our radar and that you certainly won’t see on network or even cable television.
The original film First They Killed My Father tells the heartbreaking story of a little girl dealing with violence and tragedy at the hands of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Directed and co-written by Angelina Jolie, this film is based on author Loung Ung’s own life. Also, Season 3 of Narcos premieres this month, telling the story of the criminal exploits of the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, and the original documentary Strong Island tells the story of a man’s brother who was killed in an act of racially motivated violence.
We applaud Netflix for its diversity when it comes to creating new content, and we can’t wait to add the upcoming titles to our queues as we bid farewell to some older shows and movies we happily binged.
