Westworld Season 2 is just a few weeks away. Finally, the long wait for the show to return is almost over. But what does Season 2 have in store? The finale was so explosive that when we return to the land of robots, the landscape will surely look entirely different.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead. Do not continue reading unless you want all the dirt to come on Westworld and a refresher from Season 1.
When we last saw Westworld, Delores was having a crisis of self — or was she? She was at least having enough of a revelation that she reached the center of the maze and murdered her creator. But, well, was it all by design or something deeper? It’s safe to assume something deeper, since there really wouldn’t be a reason to continue the show without the depth. But we’ve only just scratched the surface of the intricacies and philosophies within Westworld. Get ready because Season 2 is getting bigger and going farther.
Westworld Season 2 premieres April 22 on HBO.
Maeve Is Now Sentient
Maeve broke her coding to return to her daughter instead of leaving Westworld. Creator Jonathan Nolan confirmed on the Vulture TV podcast that Maeve is the only host who currently has free will. Just because she's free of her robot confines, however, that doesn't mean she's really free. Plus, her journey to get her daughter out to safety and get her to a point of free will is all going to be a long process that probably won't even be close to finished by the end of Season 2.
Other Hosts Will Start to Become Sentient
If Maeve can do it, so can the others. So far, she's the only one that creators have confirmed has free will. Nolan and co-creator Lisa Joy wouldn't spill the deets on Delores and her mind, but I think it's safe to say Delores won't stay robotic for long, if she isn't already free from the constructs of Westworld.
The Park Is Selling Immortality
A really interesting theory comes from something Teresa says in Season 1: "This place is one thing to the guest, another thing to the shareholders, and something completely different to management." This has led many fans to theorize that Westworld has a much deeper purpose. In the most likely explanation, Arnold and Bernard were somehow trying to make immortality possible. If you can create a sentient robot, then perhaps you can implant a consciousness into a robot.
Other Parks Will Be Introduced
This one is less of a theory and more of a foregone conclusion. We saw the samurai at the end of last season, clearly paving the way for introductions into other host worlds in Season 2. By now, that world has been officially named Shogun World. Other worlds that might crop up include Roman World, Future World and even Game of Thrones World — some fans are theorizing a Game of Thrones/Westeros crossover.
Ford Is Alive
Going along with the immortality theory is the theory that Ford isn't dead. Yes, Delores shot him, but what if Ford had stored his consciousness in a host? Or what if the man she shot was a decoy host? It doesn't look like Anthony Hopkins will return in Season 2, so if Ford is alive, the most likely theory is that he has implanted himself into a different host body somehow. This could take Season 2 in many different possible directions.
The Man in Black Will Become the Good Guy
Nolan teased that the Man in Black will have "a new mission" heading into Season 2, which, uh, makes sense since he completed his mission in Season 1 by finding the center of the maze. But while that hint may not actually tell us much, fans are theorizing the Man in Black will become one of the good guys as he focuses on making Delores truly sentient.
The Outside World Will Play a Bigger Role
Maeve's mission in the outside world was vague, but we can guess that it had one of two purposes: Either she was meant to be a sleeper agent, or she was meant to stage a coup in the outside world. Games Radar theorizes that Maeve's mission in the outside world will be uncovered in Season 2, and that storyline will fill in some more details about what exactly is going on in this future society.
Elsie and Stubbs Are Alive and Well-ish
Any good binge-watchers know that if you don't see a death happen on camera, then it probably didn't happen. Joy confirmed the two are still alive: "They’re finally getting to experience Westworld as guests and not in the managerial halls, but I’m not sure they’re enjoying their experience." But what, exactly, will their roles be in the upcoming season? Fans theorize that Elsie has more to do with the host awakening than she's let on.
