If by some chance you haven’t yet seen Nicole Kidman’s powerful (and award-winning) performance in HBO’s Big Little Lies, do yourself a favor and binge-watch it stat. If you have already seen it, two conclusions can easily be drawn. No. 1, you’re dying for the next installment. No. 2, Kidman’s performance is so good, it makes you want to see her on-screen in everything.
Well, wish granted! Sort of, at least. While Kidman won’t be returning to her role as BLL‘s Celeste just yet, that doesn’t mean the Oscar-winning actor is idly sitting around and waiting. Kidman is keeping her nose firmly on the grindstone as an actor and producer, lining up tons of projects in front of and behind the camera. All this activity is fortuitous for fans who not only can’t get enough of Kidman but are also chomping at the bit to see her in new, different roles that test her range as an actor.
So, get ready, ’cause Kidman is coming at ya. Here are all of the projects she currently has in the works.
A version of this article was originally published in June 2018.
‘Fair & Balanced’
In July 2018, Deadline confirmed that Kidman would play former Fox News journalist Gretchen Carlson in Fair & Balanced, a ripped-from-the-headlines film focused on Megyn Kelly's allegations of sexual assault against former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes. Charlize Theron will reportedly play Kelly, and Margot Robbie will play a fictional Fox News associate producer named Kayla Pospisil.
Producing TV & Movies for Amazon, Including ‘The Expatriates’
The latest proof that Kidman’s career is white-hot is the actor’s production deal with Amazon Studios. Per the agreement, Kidman — under the banner of her company, Blossom Films — will get a first look at scripts to develop original series and movies for the streaming giant. When announcing the partnership, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke described Kidman as “a force of nature.”
In July 2018, Deadline announced that the first project to get greenlighted under this agreement would be The Expatriates, an Amazon TV series adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee's novel of the same name. Kidman is set to star. In a statement from Salke, The Expatriates is described thus: "The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss."
‘Boy Erased’
Slated for release in 2018, Boy Erased stars Kidman along with Russell Crowe, Joel Edgerton (who scripted the drama) and Lucas Hedges. The controversial coming-of-age screenplay is based on the book Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family by Garrard Conley, whose parents forced him into conversion therapy when he was younger.
‘Aquaman’
Raise your hand if you can't wait for this one! This DC Comics superhero spinoff stars Jason Momoa as the title character, and we get two badass women to round out the cast: Amber Heard as Mera and Kidman, of course, as Queen Atlanna.
‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2
Arguably the most hotly anticipated project Kidman has teased, Big Little Lies season two is already under way. Not only do we get to see Kidman reprise her role as Celeste, but (bonus!) Meryl Streep will also be sharing the screen with her.
‘Destroyer’
After being screened at the Cannes Film Festival, this crime thriller had enough buzz to be picked up by Annapurna. In it, Kidman plays an LAPD detective who finds herself haunted by undercover work with a gang during her younger years. Kidman is said to be so good in the film that she could easily pick up another round of awards for the role.
‘The Goldfinch’
Nicole, is that you? Fans could hardly recognize Kidman when she was spotted on the set of The Goldfinch sporting gray hair and facial prosthetics. This film, an adaptation of the extremely popular Donna Tartt novel of the same name, sees Kidman as a wealthy woman tasked with caring for a young man (Theo, played by Ansel Elgort) after his mother’s death.
Another Adaptation With Reese Witherspoon
Good news, Big Little Lies fans! Reese Witherspoon and Kidman’s womance is far from over — and the future of this fabulous female friendship includes another screen collaboration. This time, the dynamic duo has acquired the rights to the new novel Truly Madly Guilty by author Liane Moriarty (yes, the same genius who penned Big Little Lies). No word yet on whether or not the actors will costar in the project or simply produce it.
‘She Came to Me’
Steve Carell, Amy Schumer and Nicole Kidman? Oh, this is going to be good. So far, that’s the cast signed on to star in the comedic drama She Came to Me, and it already sounds hilarious. Little is known about the plot yet, but The Hollywood Reporter describes it as a “sweeping comedic drama” about “the complexities of modern life with a through line of two intertwining love stories.”
‘The Undoing’
Hot on the heels of Big Little Lies’ smashing success, HBO signed Kidman for another series on the network — a murder mystery project created by David E. Kelley and produced by Bruna Papandrea. Titled The Undoing, the series will be an adaptation of the novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz and will center on the life of a New York City therapist/writer (Kidman).
