As vegan meat substitutes like the Impossible Burger and even vegan seafood gain notoriety and popularity among vegans, vegetarians and omnivores alike, it’s important to remember that our relationships to food are extremely personal. Certainly, there are a number of reasons to choose one diet over another, depending on who you are, how you live, where you live, what you like to eat and what your body needs to feel good and strong and healthy, but there are plenty of other factors to consider when it comes to choosing the right way to eat for you.
For these 20 celebrities, choosing to go vegan made sense for them. Whether it was for their love of animals, like Ariana Grande, or for bettering the environment, like Stevie Wonder, or because they didn’t want to eat things that had faces, like Bellamy Young, veganism appeals to all kinds of people. If you’ve ever thought about switching to a plant-based diet, or even if you’ve already switched, it’s worth reading what these celebs have to say about their experiences as vegans. You might be surprised by what you learn.
Alicia Silverstone
Alicia Silverstone has always been outspoken about going vegan for animal rights, and she said shifting to a plant-based diet has positively affected her body. "I ditched my asthma inhaler, stopped my weekly allergy shots, lost weight and had a new glow from my skin and hair… this way of eating transformed me," she told Food & Wine in 2017.
Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde fluctuates between veganism and vegetarianism, according to HuffPost. "[Being vegan] is not always easy and accessible, but it's a way of life and makes me as a person feel really good and physically look better," she said.
Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood told Cosmopolitan in 2017, "I never eat meat and try to eat totally vegan, which is easiest when I cook for myself." She also said, "We hardly ever takeout or eat out because I don't like to… I like knowing what's in my food, and it's hard to tell when someone else makes it for you."
Jenna Dewan
Jenna Dewan hasn't eaten meat since she saw a documentary about slaughterhouses when she was 10 years old. She told Women's Health UK in April 2018, "The next day I said 'I'm never eating meat again.' It just stuck. I feel good about it morally and physically."
Liam Hemsworth
Liam Hemsworth was inspired to go vegan by Woody Harrelson and others in his life who follow a plant-based diet, including Miley Cyrus. Per E! News, in 2015, Hemsworth told Men's Fitness that he was so enthused about making the switch that he even got his older brother, Chris, to start incorporating more vegetables into his diet. "There are no negatives to eating like this," Hemsworth said. "I feel nothing but positive, mentally and physically. I love it. I feel like it also has a kind of a domino effect on the rest of my life."
Venus Williams
Venus Williams switched to a plant-based diet for her health. "I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and I wanted to maintain my performance on the court. Once I started [eating a raw vegan diet], I fell in love with the concept of fueling your body in the best way possible," she told Health in 2017.
Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres has long been an outspoken animal rights advocate; for her 60th birthday, her wife, Portia de Rossi, created the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund in her name. According to One Green Planet, DeGeneres served the vegan Impossible Burger to guests at her extravagant birthday party, including stars like Oprah, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.
Per HuffPost, when DeGeneres went vegan in 2008, she said, "I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings. And I just couldn’t disconnect myself from it any longer."
Portia de Rossi
After Portia de Rossi and her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, moved to a farm and bonded with the animals, de Rossi told O, the Oprah Magazine for the December 2012 issue, "I started crying and thought, I can't possibly keep eating these animals. Before that moment, I wouldn't have fathomed cows doing something like that. I was forced to confront the fact that I had chosen to remain ignorant of their nature because it was just easier that way." She added, "I always thought going vegan would be difficult, but I genuinely don't crave meat or cheese. And I feel happier, like I'm contributing to making the world a less violent place."
Stevie Wonder
After Stevie Wonder went vegan in 2014, he loved his new diet so much that he sang about it on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden in 2015. In a 2016 interview with AOL, Wonder said he feels good, looks good and likes that he's doing good for the planet. "We have to be about making our planet more greener, the urban areas more sustainable for the children,” he said. “We can't just talk about it, we have to be about it."
Ariana Grande
Like many vegans, Ariana Grande chose a plant-based diet for the love of animals. In 2014, she told Mirror UK, "I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole-food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person."
Ellen Page
Ellen Page was one of PETA's sexiest vegan celebrities in 2014. Three years prior, she caused quite a stir when she tweeted, "Why are vegans made fun of while the inhumane factory farming process regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit?"
Woody Harrelson
Woody Harrelson went vegan when he was 24 years old, so he's been living a plant-based life for more than three decades. In 2014, he told Metro UK, "I used to eat burgers and steak but I would just feel knocked out afterward; I had to give them up. Dairy was first, though."
Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain has been vegan for over a decade, and she made the switch because, as she told W magazine, it was what her body wanted. "Being vegan was not anything I ever wanted to be. I just really was listening to what my body was telling me," she said. When she first tried veganism, she said, "I just had more energy than I’ve ever had in my life."
Bellamy Young
Bellamy Young told YouBeauty in 2015 that she went vegan after she had a bizarre experience in her college dining hall. "I got the baked breast of chicken, and they sort of plated it weird," she said. "As I lowered it down to my tray, it looked exactly like my mom's little furry yippy dog when she'd roll over and want you to rub her tummy. That was it for me."
Michelle Pfeiffer
In a 2015 interview with Urbanette magazine, Michelle Pfeiffer said that she went vegan to live longer, but also for vanity reasons. "Eating a vegan diet — it's just so much healthier — and you avoid a lot of toxins that could age your skin and your body. I really noticed a difference in my skin not too long after switching to fully vegan," she said. "I love the vegan diet because I love carbs. I’ve never really loved animal protein in terms of animal meat. I only ate it because I used to think it was good for me."
Natalie Portman
In 2017, Natalie Portman shared a day in her life with Harper's Bazaar, and she spoke frequently about what she eats as a vegan. Her guilty pleasure? Ice cream. "Recently, in a fit of postpartum hunger, I ordered 10 cartons of Van Leeuwen vegan ice cream," she said. "It’s my guilty pleasure. I didn’t eat 10 cartons, I just ordered them because I was on Postmates and was like, 'All of the flavors sound good, why don’t I get all of them?' So now I have all of the flavors."
Jon Stewart
When Stephen Colbert confirmed that fellow comedian Jon Stewart is vegan on an episode of his late-night show in 2017 ("Jon's vegan so he's got the abs"), VegNews reported on it with a list of Stewart's other pro-vegan moves from the past few years. In addition to owning and operating several Farm Sanctuary locations with his wife, Tracey, Stewart has also vocalized his support of vegan meats from The Herbivorous Butcher, and he sent vegan cakes from Pennsylvania-based bakery Vegan Treats to the hosts of The View.

According to Veganuary, Peter Dinklage has been vegetarian for over 15 years and has recently made the switch to veganism. Emily Deschanel
In a 2015 interview with Garden of Life, Emily Deschanel said that for her, being vegan is easy. "I love to drink green juices and eat lots of salads. I also like to make a habit of eating as many different colors of vegetables as I can. As for treats, of course, there's fruit and you can even get vegan chocolate. For Easter, I buy little chocolate vegan bunnies and give them to everyone."
Jason Mraz
Although Jason Mraz lives on an avocado farm in California, he didn't switch to a raw vegan diet until one of his bandmates made the switch out of necessity. In 2009, Mraz told Vegetarian Times, "A guy in my band found out that he had type 2 diabetes and felt that the only way he could help himself was to go raw. I did it as a partner for him so it would be a little easier."
