18 things about Jenny Slate you probably never knew

13. How did she start her career?

Believe it or not, Slate’s first foray into the folds of comedy was as a comedic duo way back when she was a student at Columbia University. There, Gabe & Jenny — with comedy partner Gabe Liedman — performed live stand-up shows.

14. Would you ever go to outer space?

“Ew, no! No, no, no, no, no. I like Earth.”

15. Tormented children are nothing to laugh about. How is Liz’s niece Denise holding up? Will we see more in Season 3 of Kroll Show?

“Denise is doing well. Yeah, you know, for someone who probably gets bullied a lot at school. She’s basically a reincarnation of me at that age except I didn’t have the long, long braid, but I mean we’re getting close. Sometimes it kind of breaks my heart a little bit to play the character ’cause I really get it. But she’s doing well. You know, she’s that kid that recycles what her parents [tell her]… my parents were always like, ‘Look, school might be hard, but, like, when you’re 30, all those girls that are mean are going to be boring, and you’re going to be cool.’ And I think Denise is kind of like, ‘Well, at this point, people might be making fun of me a lot, but when it all comes down to it, I’m an individual.’ She’s not having a fun time, but she’s trying.”

16. How much fun is it to play the most passive-aggressive actress ever on Hello Ladies? Do you base your performance on people you know personally?

“Um, I’m lucky enough to not know that woman, you know? But I think what’s tough about that character for me is that Christine Woods — who I play opposite, she plays Jessica — is so nice, and I think I’m nice. And when I went in there the first day and we started doing it, I was like, ‘I feel really bad doing this.’ I mean, the energy does feel real to me, and I don’t like it. I really don’t. You’re still staring at that person and doing it to them, even if it’s acting. And in a way, it feels more violent than fake fighting. ‘Cause at least when you do, let’s say, fake fighting in something, it’s so controlled. It’s choreographed, and you know everyone is making sure that it’s safe. But when you’re just being a bitch to someone, you’re just looking in their face and making that face, and there is a part of me that’s like, ‘I don’t like this. I don’t like it.’ I enjoy the challenge, but…”

17. Obviously, getting to work with your project must be the best. Do you see yourself doing more projects together like Catherine?

“I don’t know if we’ll do another round of Catherine, which is our sort of avant-garde, experimental web series that I’m very proud of. But we have another Marcel the Shell book coming out in November, we’re making another short, we have plans to make a feature film with music of Marcel, and we have lots of stuff that we’re working on. We have a creative household, and both of my parents are artists — I grew up in a creative household. I think it’s nice. Sometimes it’s good enough just to, like, walk the dogs, though. I’ll do whatever with him; I really like him. He’s really cool.”

18. Will we get to find out what happened to Marcel’s sister?

“We’ll probably not ever meet his sister. I think she’s gone. She’s traveling — that’s what he says to himself. But he has a lot of neighbors, and in the book we get to meet his grandmother, and you get to see he lives in an apartment where there’s a baby. Yeah, lots of stuff. He has a best friend named Jerry who’s always congested and blows himself off the couch they’re standing on when he sneezes.”
