Planes‘ Julie Bowen: You don’t know as much about celebrities as you think

SheKnows talks celebrity crushes and pickup lines with two of Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue stars, Dane Cook and Julie Bowen.

Disney‘s Planes sequel features Dane Cook reprising his role as Dusty, a determined crop duster who soared into the hearts of millions as an aerial racer in the first film, only to now find himself sporting a damaged engine that prevents him from ever racing again.

Not one to give up, Dusty joins an aerial firefighting squad in Piston Peak National Park, where he meets an elite firefighting team including a very friendly fangirl air tanker named Lil’ Dipper, voiced by Julie Bowen. The brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers battle a massive wildfire, teaching Dusty what it takes to become a true hero.

Lil’ Dipper definitely has the hots for Dusty and comes across as a little stalkeresque when the two first meet. We asked Bowen if she had any personal experience with celebrity crushes that she could draw from for the character.

“As vaguely creepy as Dipper is about her attraction to Dusty, it really is coming from a place that we all know so well,” Bowen said. “We know all about our celebrities and it gives us this false sense that we know them. And should you run into Katie Holmes at the supermarket, you want to go ‘OhmyGod, how’s it going? I feel like I was with you through that whole breakup. Are you good?'”

Bowen went on to confess she, too, has a few celebrity crushes, but that she does her best to avoid them. “Do I have any of those in my life? Yes. But I stay away from them. I see somebody that I really love and admire over in the produce aisle, and I stay away.”

And, just like a real-life celebrity, Dusty definitely seems a little apprehensive about Lil’ Dipper’s enthusiastic come-ons. Like his character, Cook admitted he was less aggressive when it came to meeting the ladies, explaining that his moves usually included swooping in after his buddies had embarrassed themselves with bad pickup lines.

“My buddies were pickup line guys, ” Cook said. “I was always the clean-up guy. I’d go to the girl after she was completely put off, and I would be this guy, ‘Hey I’m really sorry about my friends. They get a little bit kooky sometimes. Are you OK? Can I get you a drink?’ I’d make up for them. That was always my M.O.”

Bowen, surprisingly, doesn’t have a favorite pickup line story.

“I don’t think anyone’s ever used a pickup line on me,” Bowen said. “If they did, I started to laugh and thought that they were making a hilarious joke.”
