New Downton Abbey promo photo features one big blooper
Talk about embarrassing. Downton Abbey is making the rounds on the blogosphere for one wrong reason. Earlier this week, a promotional photo for the show’s upcoming fifth season was posted on Instagram and ITV’s press website. It features Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), and his daughter, Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael), standing in front of a grand mantelpiece, but there’s one thing that certainly doesn’t belong.

If you look closely to the right of Edith Crawley, there’s a very modern-looking empty plastic bottle, which clearly wasn’t made during the 1920s. Plastic water bottles actually didn’t come into popular use until decades later in the 1960s. Oops! Reps for the show caught notice of all the buzz from the photo and yanked it off their social media and press site.

Fans have caught other glimpses of Downton bloopers, including double yellow lines and even a modern conservatory in some episodes. Aside from other visual bloopers, some fans have also criticized the show for its lack of accuracy when it comes to historically dubious language. Writer Julian Fellowes has defended the program and spit the criticism right back at those detractors. “The real problem is with people who are insecure socially, and they think to show how smart they are by picking holes in the program to promote their own poshness and to show that their knowledge is greater than your knowledge.”
To see if you can catch any other bloopers, make sure you tune in to the upcoming season of Downtown Abbey, which hits America in January of 2015.
