Prince reveals the release of two new albums this fall

The artist will release two records in the United States this fall, according to Rolling Stone magazine. His solo effort, Art OfficialAge, will be released on Sept. 30, along with an album recorded with the all-female group, 3rdEyeGirl, titled Plectrumelectrum. The recent efforts are his first in five years, as his last album was his 20Ten LP released in July of 2010.

Prince will celebrate the new releases with a series of performances and special events all over the world, for which the dates have yet to be released.

Art Official Age is being described as “classic Prince” and all of the music was almost solely produced, written, composed and performed by the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince. A Minneapolis Star Tribune writer got an early listen of the record, according to Rolling Stone, and described it as “funky and nasty” with a mix of soul, R&B and funk. The Star Tribune writer also reports that the muse behind a ballad titled “This Could Be Us” was Prince’s Purple Rain co-star, Apollonia Kotero, and that Art Official Age also features an “aggressive and menacing” rap song with Rita Ora.

It may have been five years since Prince has released a full album, but the musician certainly hasn’t been sitting at home cooling his heels. He released a single off Art Official Age titled “Breakfast Can Wait” last August and caused a stir with the comedic cover art featuring Dave Chappelle, which references a skit from Chappelle’s 2004 television show. Then, in October, Prince raised eyebrows again with the release of the video for “Breakfast Can Wait,” for which he relinquished total creative control to an 18-year-old dancer named Danielle Curiel.

The “Little Red Corvette” singer was honored with the Icon Award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. “The man we know as Prince is a true artist, and he is our friend,” Billboard said. “And he is a visionary. He breaks new ground; he reminds us don’t you ever compromise your art.”
