Olympic icon Michael Phelps charged with DUI

Olympic champion Michael Phelps has been arrested on suspicion of DUI — again.

Phelps, who has won a whopping 22 medals for his prowess in swimming, was pulled over for speeding by police in his white Land Rover. Cops claim he was doing 84 mph in a 45 mph zone and was weaving across the double yellow line through the Fort McHenry Tunnel on northbound Interstate 95 in Maryland.

They then issued a field sobriety test, which was a big fat fail.

“Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver’s license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests,” a spokesperson for Maryland Transportation Authority told ABC.

The athlete was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. He was later released.

But this is not the first time Phelps has been busted driving drunk. In 2004 he was arrested after blowing a stop sign. He pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and was fined $250 and served 18 months’ probation. He later told Matt Lauer it was an “isolated incident.”

In 2009, the swimmer further courted controversy when a photo surfaced allegedly showing him smoking pot — a move that cost him his Kellogg’s sponsorship and a three-month suspension from USA Swimming.

Phelps is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. Of his 22 medals, a whopping 18 are gold — and eight of those are from his record-setting Beijing Games alone. This arrest may put a damper on his hopes for an Olympic comeback.
