It’s a sad day for rock ‘n’ roll.

Bobby Keys, who toured with the Rolling Stones for over 45 years, passed away at the age of 70 early Tuesday morning, according to his official Facebook page.

“Early this morning our beloved husband, father, family member, and friend passed away peacefully at home in Franklin, TN. Bobby was surrounded by his family and loved ones,” the posts says. “He will be greatly missed as he touched so many lives and made a lasting contribution to the American music scene. Bobby’s horn may be silenced here on earth, but the music he graciously shared will eternally live on. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family asks that contriubtions be made to St Jude’s Children Research Hospital and The Humane Society in his honor.”

The news comes just two months after the Stones announced they would be replacing Keys on their current tour. “Due to being a bit under the weather, Bobby Keys will not be joining the Stones for the Australian and New Zealand tour dates,” the website updated in mid-October. “Bobby is under doctor’s orders to take it a bit easy for the next month and hopes to see everyone soon.”

In addition to collaborating with the Rolling Stones on hits such as “Brown Sugar,” Keys also performed with other music legends, such as Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Stones took to Twitter to express their grief.

Keith Richards posted a handwritten note in remembrance of his “pal.”

Other musicians headed to social media to celebrate the life of Keys, who was considered an inspiration by many.
