In this real-life tale, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) is a successful Hollywood screenwriter, responsible for such popular movies as Roman Holiday, Spartacus and The Way We Were. His career is soaring and he’s earning enough money to live a lavish lifestyle. His only problem is that, despite thriving in a capitalist system, he’s a card-carrying communist.

Though it sounds odd that a wealthy American would choose to subscribe to communist beliefs during the Cold War, many left-leaning citizens were dissatisfied with the American political system that rewarded the top 1 percent, particularly after living through the devastation of the Great Depression. The U.S. government became determined to hunt down these communists and those they deemed “communist sympathizers.” Their biggest asset in the hunt? A gossip columnist named Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren). She won’t rest until Trumbo goes to jail — which he does. Trumbo served 11 months in federal prison in Kentucky.

Left to pick up the pieces after Trumbo gets released from jail is his wife, Cleo (Diane Lane). In our exclusive clip, she’s trying to put the pieces of her family back together again, but needs Trumbo to be less of a dictator and more of a father and a husband.
