Steven Cree & Kristin Atherton Talk Outlander Death & Reunion with Sam Heughan & Caitríona Balfe

Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Outlander Season 7, Episode 10, “Brotherly Love.”

In the latest episode of Outlander, there were a lot of tears and goodbyes. Some expected, some not expected at all. Actors Steven Cree and Kristin Atherton, who play Ian and Jenny Murray, brother-in-law and sister to Jamie Fraser, sat down with SheKnows exclusively to break down Cree’s character’s death, his time on Outlander, and Atherton’s new role as Jenny and what it’s been like joining the long-running show in season 7. Cree looked back fondly on his time, and revealed what it was like being reunited with Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, on a show they all started together 11 years ago. Cree and Atherton also offer up some relationship advice for all the Outlander characters, from Jamie and Claire, to Laoghaire, to Jenny – and you’ll want to take notes. Watch the video to hear all about the Outlander Lallybroch reunion years in the making.

Atherton confesses she was a little nervous and intimidated to come into a role that had been long established and beloved. Laura Donnelly previously played Jenny Fraser Murray back in 2014. But she credits the cast with welcoming her. “Sam gave me a big hug and said, ‘Hey sis.’” She also revealed she watched every episode of Outlanderand read the parts of the books that were important for her character. In turn, by the time she walked on set, she felt like she knew everyone really well, and they were already her family.

Cree revealed he loved being back on set with his old friends. “I mean it was great. First day back on set with Sam, up on the hill, in between every take, we were just talking about our life… It was quite surreal being back as well, because it has been a long time, it’s been 5 years, and 7 years since I filmed with Sam. And so much has changed. Even since I last filmed with Sam and Caitríona, they’ve both become much bigger stars in their own right as well, and the show has grown into this huge phenomenon, from loads of conventions, so there’s lots of fans I know personally as well. It was really special.”

Cree had once told us, that he and Balfe used to make each other laugh in previous years, and in one interview he noticed that Balfe can be seen laughing on screen when Cree improvised the line, “Stuffed cabbage Claire?” He confessed they had a few moments like that this time around, and said there’s a scene where he couldn’t even make eye contact with Balfe and Heughan, because they would have messed up the scene.

Atherton added one of her first scenes with Balfe and Heughan, where Jenny is reunited with her sister-in-law and brother, a horse had an accident all over Heughan and Balfe, that happened on Balfe’s birthday.

Since Cree’s been on the show since the start, and Atherton has watched every single episode, we asked them to give relationship advice to some Outlander characters. Let’s just say Cree’s advice was special. And confusing. And absolution perfection. He should probably be a couples’ counselor. Watch the video to find out Cree’s unfiltered romantic relationship advice for Jamie and Claire, and his now widow, Jenny. It will send vibrations throughout the Outlander universe.
