Matthew Morrison is a Real Life Minister for First Ever Tree Funeral

Matthew Morrison spent six years playing teacher Will Schuster on Glee, beaming into our living rooms and imparting life lessons that went beyond book smarts. Now he’s back with a different, but equally important, teaching role: passing on knowledge and raising awareness about our daily environmental impact.

In celebration of Earth Day, the Grey’s Anatomy and Broadway alum is officiating the first ever funeral for a tree, named Will O. Baum. Morrison, or rather Minister Morrison, has partnered with TUSHY, an environmentally conscious bidet company, to bring awareness of the sheer number of trees cut down every year: 15 billion trees killed every year, 100 million of which go to make paper products.

“Fifteen million trees a year are literally flushed down the drain,” Morrison said in conversation with SheKnows, explaining just how personal the cause is for him. “I look at my child, who is 18 months old and the world that I want him to come into. I’m just trying to make a change.” By eschewing water bottles and driving, Morrison has already taken steps to curb his own carbon foot print, a move towards sustainability that everyone can make.

The funeral service will include a eulogy performed by environmental activist and Savior of Trees, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, key words from TUSHY founder, Miki Agrawal, poetry, songs and performances from a 25-part choir and a New Orleans brass band. The service will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 6 to 9PM at the Judson Memorial Church in New York City.
