Exclusive: Sam Heughan Was In Awe Of Caitríona Balfe Filming Outlander Pregnant — ‘I Don’t Know How She Did It’

A new season of Outlander is on the horizon, and before the 6th season premiere, SheKnows had the chance to catch up with both Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. SheKnows’ Reshma Gopaldas chatted with the two stars on the red carpet of the dazzling season 6 premiere in London, and the two actors had nothing but kind words for one another — after all, they have been working together for more than five years at this point. But it was Heughan’s thoughtful observations about Balfe filming the season while pregnant that really struck a chord — read on for what he had to say about his co-star and watch our full video interview above.

“Caitríona was pregnant for real this time and I don’t know how she did it,” Heughan shared with SheKnows. Balfe announced the birth of her first child back in August 2021. “I think she hid it really well; she had so much energy. And in the height of winter in Scotland.”

Filming for hours each day, “running around,” as Heughan said, would’ve been a lot for anyone. But for Balfe, who was pregnant with her first child at the time, it meant taking on a new approach to her craft.

“It was a challenge,” Balfe revealed. “I’m not going to lie, it was definitely tough.” Even Balfe’s pregnancy didn’t stop production from filming a few Claire and Jamie love scenes. “It wasn’t [comfortable]. But these are the things you’ve gotta do.”

Through it all, though, Balfe filmed the newest season with the same professional resolve, something Heughan admires about his frequent scene partner.

“She’s a great set partner, she generous…she’s strong, she’s very thoughtful; she knows what she wants from a scene, but yet she’s also open to interpretation.”

Basically, Balfe is the MVP of Outlander in Heughan’s eyes, and we have to agree.
