‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star O-T Fagbenle Teases ‘Serena Gets Her Claws into Him’

In The Handmaid’s Tale, no one really has a happy storyline. O-T Fagbenle’s Luke has enjoyed moments of happiness, like when his wife, June (played by Elisabeth Moss), escapes from Gilead after years of being enslaved and returns to him. But all’s not exactly well, as Luke realizes when he sees her with bloody hands holding her baby daughter. And also, their daughter, Hannah, is still in Gilead being raised by evil Stepford monsters, so there’s that. SheKnows sat down with Fagbenle to get the lowdown on all things Luke for Season 5 of the addictive dystopian nightmare show. Plus, he hints at what’s to come between Luke and Serena. Insert dramatic music here.

Fagbenle shared the moment he realized just how good Elisabeth Moss was as an actress. It turns out he never watched Mad Men, so this moment of realization happened mid-scene with his on-screen wife, and he was blown away.

Plus, with the many comparisons being made between Handmaid’s Tale and modern-day politics, we asked Fagbenle which current politician his character is most similar to. “We’d have to find some incompetent political figure who’s not even good at oratory skills,” he says. “He’s not an action hero, he’s not a political leader, he’s not inspirational, he’s a cardigan-wearing guy, who likes frappuccinos.” Okay, Luke needs a new publicist.

Fagbenle also breaks down the show’s central love triangle, as June is currently torn between Nick (Max Minghella) and Luke. “He hasn’t gotten one package of nappies yet,” he tells us about his on-screen rival, whose daughter Luke is now raising. Clearly, someone is not Team Nick. He gets extra points for listing “nappies” as one of the reasons Nick isn’t worthy of June’s love.

There is one surprising person that changes Luke’s life this season, Fagbenle hints. And that is resident evil Gilead wife who’s pregnant in Canada, Serena Joy. Oh joy.

Watch the video to find out exactly what Fagbenle said to Moss when he realized just how good she is, and her amazing response back to him. And of course, why Serena will be bringing the “trouble” to Luke’s life. Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale is currently airing on Hulu.
